Default Number plate question

Hi all,

I need to get new plates made up for my private reg. Am I now legally allowed to get shorter plates made up if the font and spacing are of legal standard? As my plates a digit less.

Also any know the best/cheapest place to get new plates from?

iirc as long as there is a 10mm plate edge the law doesn't dictate the physical plate size

As above, you can have a shorter width plate so long as you keep the right spacing around the edges.

Think they look good on most cars to be honest!

I've got standard UK characters/digits/spacing and a 14mm border round my M3 plate and have never had any issues from the feds. Almost look forward to getting pulled for it so I can climb onto my high horse and act all high and mighty for 30 seconds.

Yep, IIRC the place I went was http://www.fancyplates.com/ ...it was a quick, painless process and they are professionally finished, so look the part.

Have to admit it was very satisfying telling a traffic cop his was wrong and why. He went from smug arrogant slimey git to rather red faced and stroppy very quickly. I invited him to issue the ticket and I would happily contest it in court. He just kept telling me to wind my neck in but wouldn't issue the ticket, also wouldn't admit he was wrong.

Even has the name of the maker and BSAU 145d in the bottom right corner so plod has no reason to not think it's 100% legal.
