Default Removing turbo on gt4

Hi my mechanic as away for a while n can't do my job so I'll do it myself!
Anyone have any tips or helpful ideas on how to remove the turbo unit from the st205 gt4

The turbo damper bolt that bolts to the underside of the turbo is so tight and awkward to get to!

Also the rear exhaust housing bolt is pretty impossible to get too! It's the one that is beside the actuated clip!

New rebuilt turbo had arrived and I can't wait another 2 weeks to fit it!

Also tips on primin the Turbo before fitting would be helpful guys!

I hear your pain fella. I replaced the turbo on my 205 last year, took me 2 days and a torn tendon to get it off. In the end a combination of a stud extraction tool on a extension & breaker bar, a flexi extension bar, plenty of heat/WD40, and a dremmel got it off in the end.
Wouldnt care, but I sold the car not long after.

Ah what a nightmare! That doesn't make me feel very confident lol!

Basically I've removed the front cartridge and all the bolts to the mani, flange, and 5 of the exhaust housing bolts bar the 1 at the back an the turbo damper bolt! I have removed the radiater aswell bud!
The bolt underneath is so awkward and everytime I apply pressure it jumps off and does me nuckles! We're are you from buddy anywhere local?

Thats the problem with Toyotas fella, to well made (Im on my 14th now, so have a little experience ). I never thought to take the radiator off, that would have made it a lot easier. IIRC I cut that bolt, and then drilled it out, and put a new one in.
You've done well so far fella.

Im in Northumberland unfortunately, not very local at all.

This was mine, miss it very much.

That's very clean and looks nice mate! I don't have any pictures if mine at the mine as he is on my naughty list!

I'm thinking of removing the whole front end just so I can get the leaver on removing that bolt!
Would a heat gun make it easier to remove would u say?

Also once that damper bolt is removed I will unbolt the exhaust at the cat so I can lift the whole unit off with be manifold in order to get to the rear housing bolt!

How did u get the rear bolt off pal?

The only way is to remove the rad and downpipe first to get access to the bolts also make sure you use a 6 side socket

Cheers fella, she had only been in the country a couple of years when I got her. Circumstances changed, and sold her cheap to move her on. She was very very clean.
Heat gun will def help I think. As above, getting the exhaust & downpipe out the way will def help. Like I say, I cut and drilled to get it out. I was in the "dont give a sh*t" frame of mind at the time, as it had had my life.

A good penatrating oil, lots of patience and may be some heat! If you can replace the nuts and bolts you take off with titanium ones as they do not corrode and go some fancy colours due to the heat! If you can't get titanium use stainless steel not aluminium as aluminium will melt!

I would also try getting a dremmel type tool with a steel brush to clean up as much of the threads as possible with a wire brush.
good luck

Remove the radiator yes, there should be no need to remove any other major parts of the car.

And of course when refitting, leave out all that shit behind the cat etc !!! It isnt bloody needed, and just makes life hell to remove it the first time.
Told ya the fucker who designed it needs sliced into little pieces lol

As for priming the turbo, disable the injectors and crank the engine over til you have oil pressure.
Toyota in their wisdom use a shitty oil feed so you cant prime manually once it's bolted to the car.
But obviously squirt some good clean new oil into the turbo before fitting.

I think one of the times I did it, I just took manifold/turbo/cat all out in one go. But it has been a long time.

What will happen if I Prime turbo up and bolted it up then fired her up without cranking her to build oil pressure!

I'm not sure how to disconnect injucters so maybe I'll pull a plug out n crank her over!

If for any reason it takes a few seconds for the oil to get to the turbo when the engine starts.....it could lead to early failure. It's a minute chance, but it would also invalidate any warranty.
So it isnt worth the risk not to make the effort to do it.

Just unplug the connectors off the injectors, or remove fuse for the fuel pump etc.

Ideally you'd put new oil/filter in the engine too. Belts and braces and all that.
