Default Landrover Freelander

Hi all

I'm thinking about getting a Freelander 1 as they can be had for a good price now! Has anyone got any experiance with these? Or own one whats your views on them? Itl be a winter hack and used for abit of light offroading too.

Cheers Andy

Usual K series headgasket issues, plenty to choose from and will cope well enough with playday off road days with a good set of tyres on. Most won't have seen any mud but check underneath for any damage.

steer clear, utter shite. petrols suffer from normal rover head gasket issues, IRD unit fails, leading to tranmission windup and knackering the transfer box, leak like mad in the rear, brakes are crap

if you really want one, buy a diesel and pull the rear prop off it.
frontera is a better alternative, if not too rusty

Not much better!!

Engines are strong enough but otherwise i hope you're good with a welder!
Boot floor and sills are the main issue but again shop around theres plenty of choice. Inspect one everywhere though as most will have seen some sort of action in the mud under 1k. Avoid the sub £500 ebay specials unless its a project imho.

They're a bit juicy even the diesels but a guy i know who's owned a few ran a really tidy lpg converted V8 and reckoned he got 30mpg on a run.

What about early lwb terrano's?

M/N/P reg iic, and equivalent mavericks, big old buses but with good tyres they're capable off road. They're selectable 4wd though so can be a bit lairy in the wet/ice, again they can be juicy and tired ones may have some tinworm but overall nothing major. My brother had one that had rot on the chassis that wasn't accessible without the body off!
