Been looking at the fortwo smart car 2007 onwards but has anyone got an actual experience of using one as a daily

Been looking at the cdi that claims 85mpg !!! and free road tax !!!

but then fancied a brabus one as for a bit of fun but will only see around 35mpg but with only still £30 per year for road tax

This one was mine:

http://www.thegreencarwebsite.co.uk/...t-in-the-park/

They are fine if you accept them for what they are: nippy wee city runabouts. If you want a family/sports/touring/off-road/MPV/whatever car, look elsewhere.

No idea about the roadsters but suspect they will hold their value.

I've only driven a couple and one of those was a diesel one and I thought it was proper shit. The other one wasn't too bad, just not my cup of tea.

The MHD (Micro Hybrid Drive) ones tend to eat alternator belts (the alternator doubles as the starter motor and uses the alternator belt to turn the engine over) which I've recovered a fair few for which I've been told by quite a few Smart technicians is a horrid job to do on them.

Had a go in a brabus one that was in my work that had been written off due to a small electrical fire that had melted the 2 seats a bit. Apart from that it was sound. Had a wee blast in it, the engine noise right behind your head was cool, chattering away and the turbo whistling.

It's not amazingly fast but nippy enough round town. Feels faster cos you're low down and in a light car.

Your looking at the Smart for two then.

Have one at work, wouldn't want one personally, but they are ok if it's just going to be a run around.

They are very basic, i.e. a radio/cassette player (in the first models at least) and very flimsy being everything is plastic. There are several trim models available, i.e. Pure, City etc.

The SMG gearbox is very slow to respond, this was improved supposedly in the 2009 on models with a software upgrade, they are blown 3 pot engine.

As for performance, they are not bad for what they are, but obviously they are never going to be fast.

There is a Brabus model available as well.

They were designed with safety in mind, Top Gear done a test and the body remained mostly in tact in a 70 MPH collision, the same could not be said for other sub compact cars.

smart cars are the one of the safest vehicles on the road! I'm ex Merc used to drive the a ll the time and they are amazing, would recommend petrol over diesel but they are awesome fun to drive amazing economy and like I said extreamly safe! the bra is model is quick it's 105bhp! need regular Mai fence and full engine can be rebuilt for peanuts

Imagine a dodgem car that isn't confined to it's own arena without a spike out of the top for it's power.

That's a Smart car

Someone I know drove one to Germany and went round the 'ring in it.

I have serviced a few, no drain plug to drain the oil out, the back end needs to be removed to access the plugs (SIX plugs on a 3 cyl engine)

Just been to look at a cdi 2009 convertable at a local garage. The internet made it look nice. But was ruff rou d the edges. He wanted 4995 for it as w3ll with 47k miles.

The only reason i would get one is for the mpg so i defo would not get a brab .
