They ran the engine so low the drive shaft went through the V of the engine block!

Although the cosworth built race engines had 295 BHP and the qualifying engines had upto 315bhp in the days when a engine change was allowed.
The Prodrive engines that come in for 2000 season sounded different as the firing order and crank etc where changed.

From a quick search (later Prodrive car)

http://www.modified.com/events/0309scc_goodwood/

"It was originally a 2.5, but we reduced it to 2.0-liters to fit with the regulations," says Wilcock. "We used a standard casting, but the cylinder head was completely revised. Forty individual parts were welded to the head and the process was so complex that just one in three of the heads we produced was of sufficient quality to be used on the car. The rest were just thrown away. At the time, a Touring Car cylinder head was more expensive than those used in Formula One."

mad how much the rear wiper affect downforce so much

His favorite anecdote, though, concerns the rear windscreen wiper. "We were testing at Snetterton circuit and we were way off the pace. We'd tried just about everything so someone suggested that we put the rear windscreen wiper on. The cars went back out and suddenly jumped 10 places to eighth and ninth. The wind tunnel showed that it was worth 3 kg of rear downforce, which just shows how critical this thing is. Of course, we later hollowed out the wiper."

Quite a good read that article. I remember the 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier had more downforce when the front window wad down by about 1/4.

Only on the Prodrive cars (which are the ones to have btw), the earlier cars were mid-table finishers and not all that fast

I thought it was a Mazda engine they used in these ?
Ford owned Mazda and were able to use their 2.0 V6 as the base engine.

Yeah, quite a popular wheel in the mid 90's.
Vauxhall, ford,Peugeot had them on before everyone appeared to swap to the O.Z wheels in 96.
