Default Buying a cheap sapphire cosworth

Just wondering what peoples opinions are on buying a cheap sapphire Cosworth, say around 5k, is it false economy or can you pick up something reasonable that you can add your own mark to.

First of all it depends if it's 2WD or 4x4, a £5k 4x4 will usually be a better car than a £5k 2WD, they're newer and less appealing.

I wouldn't panic about a £5k car, I wouldn't say that's mental cheap, just watch what you buy, and from who. There are people on the scene near me that I'd never buy a car from for example, especially a cheap one!

Also, depends what you can fix easiest, if mechanicals is your thing then get a car with good bodywork etc etc....

I just bought my latest one for £2k so I'd expect a pretty good car for £3k more!

Good luck!

Sold my rwd Cossie in flint grey around Christmas for £4000 was running a huge spec. Great car had some small issues of rust in the boot but other than that it was epic. Just gotta give a good look over, you see loads of cossies forsale at upto 8k and they've been forsale for ages.

I will keep an eye open, its one line of thought also looking at other cars but you cant beat the sound and smell of a cosworth.

My friend has just bought an absolutely lovely magenta 4x4 for £5k. Unwelded, original panels and superb paintwork apart from a small bubble on one arch. It's a largely standard car, 74k miles with full history and 7 owners

I reckon if you hunt around you can get a nice useable example for 5k, wont be in show condition but I reckon it would be solid and useable.

that sounds like a good buy, a car like that is something I've always assumed will be alot of money, but when you think about it, what else could you get or do with £5k??

Rolling shell minus engines are a good punt, normally around £1500 mark, then get yourself a nice YB and rebuild it £1500-2000 depending on history, and voila cheap Cossie

I got mine for the equivalent of 5.5k 3 owners from new full history original engine standard everything apart from t34.48 and greens a good straight honest car only a small plate welded to rear chassis .With in the first 4 weeks of ownership i put 2.2k into it AP brakes new hoses clutch ect and idealistically it needs a paint to sort chips ect so its going to be a 10k car when finished .So the story is it doesn't matter how good or how cheap they are they will cost good money to look after let alone get the car to a level your happy with

the problem with all cossies is people inflate prices and want mega money for scrap, i bought my 2wd for £1500 with a spare engine, unwelded solid car, it needed a respray but i can put up with that. You always put more money in no matter what you've bought the car for originally

Cossies seem to be getting advertised for stupidly inflated prices at the mo , but they are still not selling

you will get a good saff for 5k , once you have looked at 10 shit boxes that the owners think are good cars

This is so true and hence why good cars demand good money.
Its actually suprising how the bills mount up dont get me wrong I love improving my cossie and is why good cars stand out from the rest. Lots of money has been put into them and rightly so
Keep asearching , at 5k you should be able to get a half decent example.

Been looking and most at around 5k are being sold by dealers, cat c, or only had the car a couple of months, so will keep looking, I know how much money cosies take your happy for a couple of weeks and then the spending begins, just want something pretty solid to start with.

To be honest Luke I would have to remove the cage, pos new carpet, dash if cut unless its one in front of dash, my offer for your car is a little way off (or maybe a lot) of what you want.

Cage sites in front of dash fellar. It got profesionally fitted so had small box sections to mount the cage too, it met all regulations but carpet is still complete and in good condition. Pm me a offer then and we can see if its a no go-er or a possibility.

I'm about 20 miles away from the car, and may be able to view to give you a rough idea...there may be closer folk if you put another post up looking for members in Glenrothes or Kirkcaldy?

I would say though, car looks nice but it's been for sale for a while on other sites, Gumtree etc so deffo worth looking closely at.

This one doesn't look to bad but a fresh repaint, vents on the wings and wrapped spoiler and roof.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...4-1991/1027658#

does seem that I need to up my budget or travel 400 miles up north but I have seen a few cars that were in excellent condition in the pictures and terrible in the flesh which puts me off doing the miles to be honest.

Thing is, the cars are old and your budget is about average to low so I'm not sure what you are really expecting.
That comes across as very derogatory, which it's not meant to but what I'm getting at is say someone has an average condition cos, perhaps kept relatively standard etc, he decides to sell, looks in the usual places, ebay etc he'll see that pretty much any cos starts at £4000, often without mot etc so if his is a tad better he's gonna be looking at £5K minimum.
Factor in they break for £3k plus with major parts like engine etc selling quickly to kit car owners and you see that £5k is really a low start price.

A bit of a tough budget really as odd as it sounds as if you only had £3k then you know how limited the market is but i feel your expecting an £8000 car for a third less.

As for " I got this for that etc" we've all been there, I paid £2200 plus an £800 astra for my ebony back in 2006,taxed and mot'ed, softlines, rebuilt motor, leather, aircon, loads of bits done etc.

Drove it once and spent a small fortune on it ever since only to end up scrapping the shell as it was rotten from standing.

Point is unless your dead set on driving it 100% standard, never chipping it, modifying it in anyway then fair play your spending can be relatively low but my guess is that you wont and you'll fall into the trap Jay described above and spending out to make it the ....

£8k car you should have bought in the first place!!!!!!!!!

I would say im looking for an honest car, I would rather see a rusty arch or someone that has owned it a while rather than a freshly painted car that has hidden problems or I took this in PX or haven't had it long.

Im not expecting a rolls Royce by any means and spending on a cosworth is part of the fun as strange as that sounds, im not bothered if modded or standard as we all change our cars to suit.
