Yes you can - pretty sure it says so on the back of the slip!

Yes mate I did exactly this about 3 months ago. It wasn't even me (the new owner) that got the tax, had to send my dad in as I'm working when the post office is open. They were fine with it.

No you can't no more, probably a bit late this reply like

Green slip is now invalid without a V62 form. Post Office guy said he wouldnt do it off the green slip alone so i went and rang the DVLA and they confirmed it.

So i've now got a logbook on the way in my name, and i've just applied for a logbook in my name too, makes sense

Green slip is virtually a pointless piece of paper if you can't use it to tax the car thats what i thought it was for!

I got tax off the green slip on Friday for the cooper I just got.
Post office scans the barcode, checked insurance and gave me tax.

Nothing's changed.

Post office guy/dvla speaking utter shite, rules are rules, the green slip IS your logbook until the v5C arrives,if you have any shit to to local dvla office and they'll sort it straight away.

Only time that won't work is when the green slip has been stamped.

https://www.dvla.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~...ts/INS160.ashx

Page 10 tells you all you need to know.

As a side note you can tax a car without a v5c,its a hassle but possible.
You need a letter from the old owner to say they have "disposed" of the vehicle, send or go to the main dvla building in swansea, then you take your £25 to the dvla local office, apply for a v5 and tax if there and then.
Done this a few times now.
Also note if the previous keeper has filled in the v5c or written to the dvla to say they no longer own the vehicle and its on record you can apply for a v5c and tax it straight away at the local office.
