Default 4WD to 2WD easiest way!?

Hi to everyone.

This will work, won't it? Remove the chain from the transfer box and let all other parts like halfshafts, diffs and so on as they are and you will have 2WD (with 4WD weight). You don't have to exchange the 4WD parts with the 2WD ones then. Could imagine that the drivability with the propshaft donut is better than the 2WD propshaft but this is only a guess.

the easiest way is to fit a 2wd box and split the front shafts down so just the outer cv joints remain bolted into the hubs to keep the wheelbearings tight doing it the way you have mentioned will more than likely break the 4wd box

if you remove the chain you have to open up the box

but even if you do that, the viscous coupling will fail and you will be left with no wheel drive

the centre diff has a limited diff thing in it, but it doesn't work when both axles are rotating it together like a normal standard diff won't have any limiting action when you are driving in a straight line

remove one driveshaft though and eventually the diff will burn out leaving you with no drive at all

you need to fit a 2wd box and remove the front prop and both driveshafts (and change the sump if you want to go that far) but you'll also lose the front geometry as the front wheels are designed to be set with a thrust angle as they will be driven so that means changing not only the crossmemeber but also the steering rack as well as the anti roll bar as it is also set up for 4wd geometry rather than 2wd (been there done that, 2wd roll bar on a 4wd car meant that straight line ability was really nervous, but turn in and cornering was vastly improved, but not nearly enough self centering of the steering when you let the wheel go)

so lots to consider

Thanks for clearing that up. I will go the classic way with part exchange then.

depends on how long you've had the car for, i mean, if you leave everything as is on the 4wd car and just swap the box at least you know it's your car

if you swap it for another one you'll have to get to know the new car, and it may not be as good

it's been done before plenty of times, you just have to appreciate how much work it is

Thanks for all replies. First the reason of converting a 4WD is the cheaper emission class cause its my daily and it has the cat included..... an upgrade for a 2WD to euro 1 is expensive and I dunno if the euro 1-kit is available. Not much a problem for a summer toy but for a daily it makes a lot of difference.
