Cone filters - is bigger always better?
Evening all
I need to buy a cone filter and have a length of 10" and a width of 7" to place it. Is it always worth buying the biggest one that will fit, or is bigger not always better? Would a longer thin one work better that a short fatter one? And is there any benefit to having a cylinder shape / cone shape etc?
Also, what is the deal with a 'group a' filter? Apart from the wider neck which you need to reduce down anyway I don't see the difference.
This is a one off system so an off the shelf induction kit made for the car wouldn't work.
Cheers

Much of a muchness really all proven not to give you any gains just a nice sound.
I'd say the piping is the most important as on a standard car anything bigger then the inlet the ECU will struggle to compensate.

Cheers guys, it will be fairly insulated from engine heat by the time I am finished and it will have a cold air feed coming from the original location so all should be good. I currently have a system on the car that mounts the filter right down the bottom corner of the bumper, I am paranoid about hitting a flood or anything, it has happened on more than a few occasions to other ST owners with a similar kits, .
Will have to see how it compares once it's done.

Id be more concerned with getting it sealed off from everything else and getting the best direct cold air feed you can and then use whatever size best suits the airbox set up, that's more important in my opinion

I fitted an itg filter to my m3, I noticed no difference other than the noise, which is nice.
But they almost always add 8-10bhp on the rollers with just a cheap crappy heatshield.
I've made my own heatshield that's got heat matting on it too and is much bigger/more effective than the others and also run a 4" air feed from the fog light hole. So mine will have added more like 12bhp and you still couldn't tell lol.

You use the size of Filter to supply the air your engine requires not fit in a required space. K&N will supply figures of approx BHP if you ask so you can choose which shape suits you best. Ive seen people fit Filters because they fit nicely in a given area that im afraid is not what its about. I had to do a few mods to fit my beastie to fit but its was one of only two K&N could supply at my BHP so i made it fit.
