Im going to try and keep this as short as possible but 100% factual just so anybody thinking of using them or possibly any other warranty company will know exactly what they are getting into.
I bought a 54 plate X5 4.8is in january this year and decided to purchase an aftermarket warranty at the same time for a little piece of mind.
I went with Warranty Direct and chose thier prestige and performance extra care upgraded package as it seems the most comprehensive on paper. This policy comes at a cost of £750 for 12 months cover plus £80 for an initial condition inspection.
The car developed a whining noise last weekend which my local maindealer have today found to be a noisy aux belt tensioner pulley (bearing collapse). This part is £35+ and labour is £165 so its not a lot of money.
Warranty direct state in thier policy that tensioner pulleys etc ARE covered.
Warranty Direct have however refused to pay for the repair due to the fact that this tensioner pulley is called an "idler pulley".
Have i mistakenly been thinking a spring loaded idler pulley is the same as a spring loaded tensioner pulley?
The "items NOT covered" section is quite specific and does NOT state "idler pulleys" and related parts are not covered.
Anyway....
After following thier official complaints procedure today they have offered to pay £100 towards the cost which i politely refused.
I also requested the policy be cancelled and refund my premium to which i was then told i wont be entitled to a refund and will have to pay a cancellation fee!!!
Do i need to put my big girls pants on and just deal with it? or am i right in thinking these cunts are.......well.......cunts! and fight them for every last penny?

Tell them to send you proof that a idler pulley is not covered on your policy.
And to show your signitures on that same form.
Sounds like a breach of contract to me.

Got done over three years ago by them. Cost me more in mechanics time to prove the parts were faulty.
If they had of been local I'd have driven to the call centre and smashed the arrogant **** I had on the phone then set about his manager and I'n not a violent person.
But when I've paid £450 for a years cover I expect to be able to claim.
Even Tesco pulled out of this game. Proper cowboys.

Wouldn't ever get one of their policies after working in the motor trade and dealing with them!! You would honestly be stunned by how many claims they reject!

Take another look at the policy.
Is it an tensioner or an idler?
Tensioner being adjustable, spring or pneumatic loaded.
Idlers/guides are fixed.
As crap as warranty often is it sounds to me like they might well be in the right.

IMO, an idler pulley is non spring loaded, it is just a free wheeling pulley that does nothing apart from directing the belt around an obstacle or similar.
A tensioner pulley is as you say, a spring loaded pulley that tensions the belt!
I have had a couple of these warranties thrown in for 'free' when I've bought cars. Tried to claim a couple of times but not had any success.

When i bought my old mk5 escort cb i got a warranty with that, which stated wear and tear items were not covered. Fair enough.
But when the fusebox developed a dry join around the fuel pump relay the cunts wouldnt replace that!
So lukily as i was working in electronics i ook he box apart and resoldered every joint i could get the iron on.
My point is, they are all useless cunts!

My thoughts are that these companies are out to make as much money as possible, this will therefore involve rejecting as many claims as possible to minimize out going on the premium payed.
This means they will take larger margins from the insurance company backing it. To facilitate this they WILL have a "very pro active" legal team!
good luck.

I see one bright spark has said they are out to make max money, thats right just the same as we all are only charities work for nowt. Another says they are useless cu*ts, you dont survive if you are that in todays world. Did you get your legal advisor to study your contract if you didnt you are very foolish. Its a limited warranty not a its gone wrong you must pay scheme.

They will be. If its covered they will pay if its not they wont. Its an established business & they will abide by the rules you have signed. They are not idiots or crooks just a business that knows there market.

I also understand that they have to make money to survive, and you can only go so far to protect "joe public".
Everyone draws the "ethical" or "business" line in different places for different things!

Cheers for the input guys.
.
Just to clarify, the BMW technician I spoke to yesterday described the pulley as a "spring loaded tensioner that is used to keep the correct tension in the auxiliary belt" I therefore see it as a tensioner pulley rather than a solid bolted pulley used to route the belt.
I would like to say I am aware that all company's have to make money and they would not be sustainable if they failed to do so. I could rant on about ethics etc etc etc but I'm just looking at this today as a lesson learned
It's pretty much water under the bridge now tbh, I am paying for the repair and seeing as its going to cost me more to cancel the policy I might aswel keep it running.

James
If it was for a cost of a gearbox or something expensive I would push them (probably to no avail). To be completely honest buddy after a good nights sleep I woke up with the "meh!" attitude towards it all this morning.
