Just a reminder, has been years since ive had a car move / slip on a jack, so was quite shocked, hadn't got it high enough to get the axle stands under yet !

To the OP - hope no car damage as it looks a funny angle now for the jack to insert again.

I never use the crappy car jacks, it's not so much the car but on older cars the jacking points themselves, but yes the moral still stands in any case!

yep im normally a trolly jack person, but never jacked it up before, and its covered underneath in covers, so couldnt see where to place the trolly jack.

still at least it happened at home, and not at the size of the road with a flat tyre, will just have to carry a trolly jack in the boot now!

Agree'd.

The only car that I've ever had fall off a jack was an E36 M3 with one of those jacks! The wheel was off and I watched as it gracefully fell, coming to a rest on my mrs' car's bumper. That saved it from any damage and I managed to get another jack under before it slipped off the bumper.

I've had a car fall off a jack with me under it before and it wasn't pleasant.

I was young and very, very stupid to think that I'd get away with just doing a quick job underneath without using stands.

Needless to say it was a harsh lesson learned very quickly and a mistake that will not be repeated by me!!

Those jack are only for changing a wheel nothing more ... Anyone who would contemplate going under a car with one of those holding the car are insane !

cheer, tho got a trolley jack , was just using that to get it up and get a stand under it, to see where a trolley jack would go in the future.

When working on my Granada i ALWAYS use two spare wheels with blocks of wood to support the front of the car and a trolley jack with another block of wood under the subframe as backup

I NEVER use a standard jack unless mega emergency.I know its been said but I also put wheels under even when using a trolley jack.
I remember my mates 2-8 falling on him and burning both of his arms off the pipes and splitting his eye open when it fell off the trolley mounted under the diff.
It split his eye because he turned his head.If he had still had it in the upright looking position it would of probably split his head like a melon.
Standard jacks are bloody dangerous imo,new or old

it really does make you think. I am guilty of working under a car for quick jobs with just the trolley jack. pure laziness. from now on ill be using axle stands. one slip and it could make real mess

There was a lad on this forum a few years ago died under his discos doing a gearbox job I think and his trolley jack moved

I always use a set of axle stands since as I swear my 3.5 ton jack lowers slowly but it don't do it on stands or it might just be in my head

At the moment It normally is Axle stands. I have 2 sets and vary which ones I use as the profile at the top is different which ever one suits get the job! When changing engine mounts I worry unless I am next to a jack as well as having the engine hung from my crane as that is only rated to 500kg.

Any way my wife does go a bit nuts unless it is belt AND braces! - post the little one when I dive I am no longer allowed a single point of failure!

It's worked so far!

Only incident I've had when under a car was.. Me and my boss underneath a Toyota Hilux, was on two axle stands under the rear axle, wasn't the sturdiest ground but we had little choice. Can't remember what i was changing but had a long 1/2" bar and was undoing a bolt, pulled on the bar and the Hilux rolled backwards off the axle stands! Luckily being a hilux we were both ok. Best bit, it was on the Olympic Park site when it was being built! Would have caused a fuss, it was like a nightmare getting on there to work.
