I've got an 1800 zetec engine with ECU from a K plate mondeo going into a project car, will I need to get a mondeo ignition barrel and get the ECU re-coded to suit the new transponder?

I have a Ka ignition barrel lying around, could this be used on the mondeo ECU without recoding it?

No: early (pre-96 iirc) Mondeos had external PATS - not on the ECU.
