Default Hand painting a cage/space frame

Right as some of you no i have a space framed mk2 fiesta that is still in bair metal.

The car its self its built for the purpose of drag racing and light road use.

Now as im in the stage of building the car up before i strip it back down again to have it painted. As i dident want to have it painted then have to grind the paint off to weld brackets/rad mounts ect

So the plan was to build it up to as near compleat as i could before strip down/paint ect.

Right hears why im thinking i keep getting quoted £600-£800 to paint it as its a complex cage that i can fully understand tbh as looks a lot of work involved.

But after seeing a few mates cages that haven't even seen the road yet the tube frame it self seems to chip really easy. Now i dont wanna cash out X amount for the paint to keep chipping off. As lets face it the engine/car will be stripped down a lot in the Future and i dont want to have to keep having it repainted ect.

My boss hand painted the underside of his stag and it looks more than up to a standard i would be happy with tbh!

I like the idea of if i chip it/catch it i can Touch it in hear and there!

What do you think? Yes i no paint will allways look 100 times better but the car is built for a purpose and winning show and shine is not one of them!

i would fully etch primner all the bare tubes and leave to dry and harden for a good day then get a good rattle can paint and do it again leave to harden properly ! Using hamerite is all good but it takes ages to dry and never looks a nice job

Any coating will chip eventually if open to the elements. I wouldn't advise powder coat, it is quite hard so will chip and as you say, not easy to touch in! Personally if it were me and not bothered about surface finish then I would etch prime with aerosol and finish with a few layers of stone chip paint, should be the most resiliant to damage and easy to just lick over!

I painted mine with http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/paint/s...skuId=11858657

It isnt perfect, but it's cheapish, and the finish came out well. Any time Ive used hammerite on metal, it chips off very easy so seems a waste of time
Plus Hammerite needs special thinners for the brushes.

It applied much much smoother when using those little brushes with thousands of the tiny short bristles and a square/rectangular head.
When the brush head is new though, use in on some old metal first as some bristles seem to come loose. After that it applies very well. With a normal brush the finish is terrible.

that said, if you could have it powder coated it would be best. Even a few touch ups on black powder coat with black paint shouldnt look that bad

hand paint it using any gloss paint (primer first) from a hardware shop...can even use dulux so got 100's of colours to choose from, for the bits of the frame/cage that are on show use a mini roller with foam attachment. take your time and prep well and you will get a good finish.
