YB head identification.
Ive got leaky cam seals and need to identify if my head is 2wd or 4wd as the oil seals are different.
I know 2wd are supposed to have turbo hanger lugs but they sometimes get machined off.
Any way of telling which is which??

As said, the oil feed in the middle of the head on exhaust side. Sometimes gets blanked off with a bolt though, like mine. I still use the 2wd feed even though I have a 4x4 head.

it is a 4x4 head.
Temp is located front left 2wd rear right under the cts on 4x4
And i think the cts on a small turbo head is on the front right inlet side.
Only very early 2wd heads have 2 bolt thermostat design.
these are some i had

I've had a few lol, are you sure its leaking from the seals? just that they can leak from the bearing carrier joint to head where people forget to seal if they have had the cams out.

im thinking its more likely the crank tbh as thats where all the oil seems to be staining. If its leaking from the cam cover joint then its too small to be noticed on the drive to and from work today as i cleaned bits off with break cleaner to see where its coming from.
but if im going to have to replace the belt then i might as well do the seals while im at it. That way i know its done.

where would it leak if it was the cam carrier? bear in mind my cams havent been touched in 15k miles and the leak is recentish. would it just piss out the front between where the half moons go??
camcover was done 6 months ago by someone i trust so i doubt its that.

where the ends of the half moons sit thats where the joint is many people assume its the half moons when infact its the joint. to fix remove front cam bearing carrier tops fully clean head and under carrier clean rubber O ring and reseal carrier refit and torque to 10nm
I can do you pics of area if you need them tomorrow

Awesome costina! I know where you mean now.
Need to stop the leak as the oil is going fucking everywhere its only loosing a litre of oil per 1000 mile so its not too bad now but before i was only burning a few hundred ml per 1000 miles about town and less on long runs as its only 15k since rebuild so hardly worn out really.
Most annoying thing is it runs down the block, then when rad fans come on blows it rearward on the block and onto my downpipe which is covered in wrap so when i run the antilag it smokes once red hot as the oil burns off!!
Oh and ive renamed by car the "torrey canyon".

No worries hope it helps i've also found that the cometic cam cover gaskets are very very good and thats all i use now. but i would recommend not to use tiger seal with them try innotec sealer thats very good and it wil peel off so u can reuse gasket if need be.

looking at your pics the oil which is all above the head gasket looks fresh and coming from cam cover/seals area.
If your doing it yourself this time ensure the cover face is flat and that u torque up the cam cover bolts starting in the middle working outwards same as head bolts torque to 10 nm.

is that including the new fire rings steve?? if so thats not too silly and i might buy one to keep "in stock" in case i ever need it.
Its one of those things that if i have one on the shelf, then i wont have to use it
eg i had a phantom water leak middle last year from the waterpump area. it was even pissing out the tell tale holes top and bottom - classic water pump death.
Literally as soon as id ordered a new pump, the leak stopped new pump is still in the boot and its not lost a drop of coolant since then
fucking cossies
