Default Home made flamer kit help

I know what ur all gonna say but this flamer kit is purely to see what sort of flame my car can make. (not for road use) im gonna try get into car shows this summer and have a go with it there.

I had a go at making a flamer kit today but it didn't work, i had just a coil, lead, s.plug, toggle switch and obviously didn't work dunno what i was thinking also melted a wire from the battery to the switch.

Im after a little list of how to do it properly, wiring and what parts to use if someone could take the time to do so.

I saw this a bit ago so now i want a flamer kit and a 2.9 BOA for my Sierra in the future.

No but purely IMO you will be adding something chavvy but hey its your motor mate, I dont know what else you should need tbh it should work, you may need a higher ampage cable

Well the propper kits come with a relay and a control box but surely it should be easier and cheaper to make one.

lol
But if you really must then I would use a momentary switch on the negative to the coil (Ignition live to coil, spark plug earthed out through exhaust).

no wonder it melted.

run a heavier wire to a relay at the coil, and use a switch to trigger the relay giving the coil power.

how does your coil work? will it spark when powered up, or do you need a trigger for it? thats probably what the control box in the kit does.

If you use a standard coil, wouldn't it spark only when you turn the switch on and off rapidly? Like the ignition trigger in old distributors...

Battery+ to coil +
Battery - through a rapid trigger to coil -

If its constantly on, that's why it melted the wire

The couil will only fire when you make and break the primary voltage to it. The controllers have a timing circuit to rapidly switch the coil voltage. Without this, the coil would be permanently live when you apply power, hence no spark and a burnt out feed wire. A proper flamer kit with control box will only ever cause a flame if you have unburned fuel and oxygen in the exhaust, this is not very likely unless you do something to the fuelling system as well.

Please just buy one in a kit if you're gonna do it at all. We don't wanna hear on the news that a local car set alight, and spat flames out, torching the neighbours cat etc

It wont be ruined believe me. It'll look the same apart from a descretly placed spark plug and a nicely positioned toggle switch.

If you do as I said above it will work fine, this is how the ECU runs the coil (or coil pack) in most engine's.... Negative trigger, ignition live.
