Default Be afraid, it CAN happen to YOU!!!!

Got home last night after being away for a few days working at a trade show. Logged on to my online banking to pay a few bills etc to find that on Monday, someone hacked into my account set up a transfer and basically transfered EVERYTHING out of my account!!!!!!!!

And I aint talking 20 quid here either, I am talking thousands and thousands of pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use the Halifax, and the guy who hacked me transfered the money into another Halifax account. Was on the phone to them last night and then onto there fraud department this morning. The girl let slip that it is actually quite a common occourance. They said I will get my money back with no problem, but it may take up to 21 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The account that the money went to had already been frozen yesterday morning, so I am guessing that I aint the only one who he had a go at.

I aint balming the halifax, as I guess all the banks are suseptable to similiar attacks, but just keep your eye on your details and regulally change your log in info.

I'd literally shit myself if that happened to me, I'm online with Natwest and it must be a huge problem because I've had multiple e-mails asking for me to log in etc...any idea how he managed to get hold of your details?

God knows how my details got out. I use one laptop, I am the only person that uses it, I have all the spyware, virus stuff on it and I have never answered one of those bogus e-mails, so god knows.

I understand how big an issue this is as my software company sells security and encryption software to banks, for specific types of main frame hardware (Halifax DON'T use our stuff!!!) and it is a massive problem for them.

The issue is never the back end main frames though, they are always fronted by a load of UNIX or Windows boxes and they are ALWAYS the weak link!!!

yeah but sean EVERYTHING can be hacked. altho the most likely cause is someone that works for them and knows the system did it. SO much more common for it to be internal.

bit like credit card fraud... its so much more common for dodgy shop assistants etc to do it than it than for sum1 to steal your creditcard and spunk money on it! thats the main motivation behind chip n pin... stopping fraud within the merchants! not the punters!

What software company do you work for sean cause I sell IT security but work for a distributor........
I always tell my bank to stick their online banking now cause I know they don't protect the users like they should from.....

We had a presentation from a guy who runs the IT infrastructure for large investesment banks and such last week, he was saying pretty much ALL the fraud problems these days are from people on the inside!

Glad to hear you'll get the cash back though

england has stupid online payment systems..
In holland its impossible to hack a bankaccount because of something called a random reader... In this random reader we place our bankcard.. type the pincode and the random reader answers with a 8 digit access code only valid for 55 seconds..
there is noway this can be hacked

Fookin Hell mate, glad to hear that your gonna get your money back if nothing else!

I personally don't use online banking facilities and never will, prefer to see in 'real' terms where i'm spending my money, but i'm still worried about card transactions and things!

Everyone check your monthly accounts too! Keep an eye out for these fuckers!

blimey that's pretty scarey!

Sometimes I go for a few months before checking my bank account (like the time I was paying Gas and Electric on my old house for 8 months after I sold it before I realised they'd been taking money ), think maybe I should keep a closer eye on it.
