The big thing that most setups fail on is just having a fan blowing air around the engine bay but not actually venting the room itself, so all they are doing is transfering the heat out of the radiator, intercooler, engine bay, exhaust etc into the room. This then heats up the room air and of course then that same warmed up air is sent back over the engine, so the cooling gets worse and worse as the air gets warmewr and warmer in there.

The second problem is exhaust gas extraction - if that exhaust gas is allowed to stay in the room then it poisons both the humans in there and ruins the engines results as the oxygen is being replaced by exhaust gas. Its also very hot of course, so adds to teh room temps again. Worse still, if its MAPPED in such a scell there is a very very strong chance the engine will grenade itself once it sees fresh air for its inlet and cooler charge temps.

I could go on... the list is endless. Building a good dyno cell is NOT as simple as it first appears.

Lighting, HD cameras, TV's and Computer systems are next. More cash....

My intended airflow is going to cause plenty of headaches yet though as 900+ room changes per hour is a LOT of air movement... watch this space as its soon time to start working out the differential pressures between the cell and the outdoors but I fear the fans I need arent going to be here before the dyno itself.
I was going to say, you will have to be careful you don't get a big depression in the cell. If your exhaust extraction is good, and the cars engine doesn't have any leaks, I think you may be surprised at the amount of airflow actually needed. How are you going to control fan speed? PID with cell temp? Or to hold a certain cell pressure?

I have mate, but the space needed and sadly the prices quoted are prohibitive.

Fair enough. There a couple of manufacturers in the Midlands who need work so I would image there is some haggling to be done.

What fans you going for? Long cased axials?

Thats the plan so far mate, 2 of 1mx1m each, but if you have any suggestions I would appreciate the heads up to sales@remapping.co.uk as I am going to place the order tomorrow!

Stu, I ran mechanical install on hybrid electric motor brake dyno test cell earlier this year. They didnt require as many air changes as you but they were sizeable! I dont have the info with me tonight but I am in the office in the morning. I know some very competitive suppliers in the Midlands and would say send me the fan details you have been quoted. I would imagine I could sort you a good price. Will PM you my email addy, Chris...

Nothing much to report about the cell progress this week so far, its all painting and decorating, but I have managed to get the dyno cells PC Connectivity finished in a custom faceplate I am pretty proud of.

Sorry mate, missed this reply.
Actually, we WANT a depression in the cell, otherwise the cell can force deadly fumes into surrounding buildings / offices, but it wants to stay on the atmosphere side of 1/2 water otherwise it will cause no end of problems with mapping as i suspect you are referencing with your comment?

Agreed that with a well sealed engine and transmission we could get away with probably 300 changes per hour, but lets face it, in our industry those cars are few and far between.
(yes, I am pointing at you bastards with open breather pipes.. )

B
ut of course one most not forget the extra loading from tyres, retarders, hubs, transmissions and exhausts. On big power cars that is a lot of heat to be transferred to maintain a cell temperature that will mimic road temperature conditions and this is whee a chassis dyno needs far far more cooling than an engine dyno for example.

My aim is to be able to do 10 power runs on an 800bhp 4wd vehicle that are all within 1% of each other.
Anyone who has ever had 10 power runs done back to back on a chassis dyno will know how hard that is to achieve (But perhaps wondered why?)

Absolutely Stu, it's quite a difficult topic. By making it a cell, has made it much harder for you, but obviously when it's up and running, and working really well, it will be WELL worth it!!

From experience though, don't underestimate how long it can take to get to that point

Stu on your new Rr can you reverse off it as the old dd you had to drive off it and as far as I know it didn't allow you to rev off it.

Hi Mark,
No, the new one has the same limitation but we have a workaround in place for it. I really hope it works. ROFLOL

You cant reverse off a DD dyno ? How does that work ?

Ive been at some where the car was driven on, and reversed off. And visa versa, reversed on, and driven off.

You can control fan speeds with an inverter drive, relatively easy to fit in and program.
Some great work, you've got a good team there.

I presume its to do with the way the rollers are driven? (Think of when peddling on a bicycle, one way has drive, the other doesn't.)
