i would imagine so it doesn't create a path for noise/vibrations through the sound resistive wall structure.

We have sound proofing for the door sorted, but for the time this will be used partially open housing the two extractor fans.
Eventually I think we will use a wall mounted extractor firing the noise up over the roof, and then keep the door shut.

Well teaching the age groups I was made it pretty hard as it seems most don't really want to learn anything, I was teaching part time, around 25 contact hours per week, and running my own business aswell and it just became too much.

25 contact hours is full time teaching for me ! It is a job that takes a lot of dedication and planning, trying to run your own business would have been impossible.

I was working and teaching at one point, one had to go !

Yeah that's what I found, the teaching was slowly taking over and I found myself doing far more hours than I planned on when I started.

The longer you do it, the easier it gets though, you can use and tweak sessions you have run before so prep time can drop after a year or so I found.

Why not use acoustic boxes then? there only a couple of quid more, looks alot neater than surface boxes imo

RWA45, same as you mate, and its working well, we have been testing it with a sound meter as we go along.

Flush mean having to drill through a pretty complex triple layer accoustic wall and replace that 6x4 piece with a 20p plastic box that would render the rest of the wall useless as the sound would enter the cavity behind the damping wall.

The big headache now is getting the extraction fans sourced and then installed. I want 600 room changes per hour as a minimum ideally, but would love to achieve 1200 changes, but its proving to be a real headache with regards fan size due to the available space we have, without having to use a high speed fan that will generate a whole load of noise.

On the plus side, the decorators are doing a great job with reception and the stairs/hallway etc which is nice as it gives us a feeling of the end being in sight.

Could you not mount a big, high speed fan inside an attenuated enclosure up on the roof out of the way Stu? I know the ducting will still be pretty big but certainly smaller than the fan.

Hi mate,
We have looked and had to pretty much write that option off due to the way the door rolls open up there. It's a shame as that is one of the best places to mount them.

I'm going to jump in and do an update here.

I've broken the stapler.the handle fell off. So I can't put anymore rubber soundproofing up.

I'm nearly done as well

Hi Glenn, yeah it comes with 2 days of training, but Kenny and I used rollers daily for many years at our previous place. Getting up to speed with any new tool is always very worthwhile though of course.

Ok, a few updates.
The building has finally turned that corner where the project starts to look like it has an end in sight.

The accoustic louvres where in place, but I have changed the airflow specs of the cell and am aiming for over 900 room changes per hour (once every 4 seconds) so these are now to small and have had to go back for some specification changes.

The exhaust extraction system was sealed and comissioned.

The reception area was finally plastered and decorated.

As was the stairs and landing.

And the training room has finally been plastered.

And the downstairs office / Control room is finally underway.

The engine building clean room construction is underway and the main studding and soundproofing is in.

I snapped a few images of the soundproofing sandwich and suspension bar layout so you can see how it works, as follows:
  • 1 layer of 15mm acoustic grade plasterboard
  • 1 layer of 4mm acoustiblock ultra dense matting
  • 1 more layer of 15mm acoustic grade plasterboard
  • All screwed onto a furring bar
  • Which is then mounted on genie clips to mount the whole thing onto rubber.

And the dyno cell itself as it looked last night.

Massive thanks to all the staff here, they have been working like animals to get this ready for me, and I cant thank them enough.

You would struggle to find any building products around that would readily catch fire, or emit any dangerous fumes in the event of a fire.

Even the glass used on some internal windows that border fire escape routes must be special fire rated stuff, and bloody expensive.

Rockwool is exactly that, rock wool. It doesnt burn well at all, I've tried with some left overs from when I did my garage Plasterboard doesnt burn well either.

Thanks guys, it finally feels like it might even work one day.
Lighting, HD cameras, TV's and Computer systems are next. More cash....

My intended airflow is going to cause plenty of headaches yet though as 900+ room changes per hour is a LOT of air movement... watch this space as its soon time to start working out the differential pressures between the cell and the outdoors but I fear the fans I need arent going to be here before the dyno itself.
