Plasterers, Plumbers etc..
Hi all, after 5 1/2 years wasted working in a garage i've decided i want to move into the construction trade and i'm looking into either plastering or plumbing ( unless anyone can tell me differently ) My main problem at the moment is i don't no which route to take i mean should i...
A: Go to college for 2 - 3 years? Then try and find a job after with the qualifications i gain? ( this means working part time too )
Or
B: Try and find a job with training which may seem the best way cos i'll get paid too but a lot of the jobs advertised dont offer any qualifications just on the job training with no college or anything.
So i guess i'm asking for a bit of advise really as i don't want to waste another 5 years.
Thanks Chris
Ps. If anyone has any job opportunities around South Yorkshire let me no

youll be lucky to get a place at collage too as there all booked for 2yrs in advance up here in manchester
i did find a course where you could go and be trained within 6 weeks which was Ł3000 and ment going away for 6 weeks
plastering has to be the best option as they dont get out of bed for less than Ł150 a day

Also why would you be a plasterer if you had your time again?

it is not that important as a plasterer to have full qualifications as most firms will employ a plasterer if he can show he can do the job to a good standard . but it is getting harder as the goverment as brought in the new CSCS cards to route out the cowboys ,the best you can do is to get a job mixing and pick up the tools as you go and in a few years may be good enough to branch out on your own mate, someone allways needs a plasterer
much cheaper to get into plastering than plumbing mate also the kit you need for both jobs are miles apart interms of cost and whould not take as long to learn to.
But like most things you whould need to get taken on by some one mate and pick it up as you go a long, best of luke

I was aprentice plasterer from the age of 16 to about 38. Have done Royalty work. You end up with arthritis, back trouble, shoulder trouble. One min loads of work & then nothing. You work on price, they tell you X amount per metre, when you do loads of metres, they then lower the price on the metrage.Plastering today is basically setting plasterboard. You are only as good as the man who taught you. As for being a plasterer, forget it, mugs game. Be a plumber.
I started serving my time as a plumber back in '91. Shit money to start with, Ok if youre in your late teens. I'd highly recommend it, Its a brilliant trade. Any time i meet plasterers their all ways covered in shit. They burn out in their late 40s, all that trowling and shit. I'm in the fire service now and i'd recommend that even more if you can get it. All the boys at the station are always looking for jobs done.
