As above, recommendations to clean an engine, it is out of the vehicle so though I would spruce it up before it goes back in, however, I bought some Gunk from halfords and that barely touched the crap on the engine :/

TFR in a squirty bottle and work it in with a paint brush

 

Sit it in Malt vinegar or coca cola for a couple of days
