Default Need an alternator for the M5, anyone get me a deal or reccomend a place?

Well after our long road trip and thrashing the hell out of the car over the weekend, the car broke down in Edinburgh, alternator failure
I have priced one up from Eurocarparts at 480 quid and also at bmwminiparts at 490 quid, which is pretty steep, so looking for other alternatives like getting it rebuilt for example.

I do not want to put on a 2nd hand part, and ideally not any aftermarket stuff either unless is an equivalent bosch/lucas part, but suggestions welcome.

I remember the M5 on wheeler dealers had alternator failure. Ol china stripped it down and rebuilt it on the bench fitting new bearings etc for the fraction of the cost of a replacement alternator.

Would you really want the prince of darkness under your bonnet?

I wouldn't fit a Lucas item over Bosch!

Great minds think alike, you beat me to it!

I remember a new one was Ł500

In this case all was wrong is a bearing, but tbh you can rebuild yourself fairly easy if you can get hold of brushes etc.

Not sure what shape M5 you have but I remember when I had my E39 (wasnt an M5, just an 530 m sport) my alternator failed, turned out to be the solenoid or something inside it (couldve been brushes...), took it to a local alternator specialist and they replaced the solenoid for Ł40..... fixed!!

It is that shape.
I'd have what you've got professionally repaired,it'll last for years and cost 122 the money. You can keep your eye out on eBay then for a new replacement on the cheap if your still worried?

Thanks alot for the input, the car is with a specialist who's taking the part off today, I spoke with a company online who are going to refurbish it for 100 quid, c/w with 12 month warranty, so pending any disasters I'm going to go this route and hopefully save myself a few hundred quid.
I'll let you know how it goes, but thanks again for checking out the prices for me, between this buggering up and the saph the way it is at the moment I need to be watching the pennies if I want them both on the road by the end of the month.

Not started it yet
It's sitting up in Peterhead, I'm planning on getting it on the ramp on saturday morning and hopefully having a few hours at it stripping the parts off and have a look for any obvious wiring faults near the starter etc when it's up in the air.
Alternator is now going to taylors tomorrow to be stripped and inspected, might be a bit more ŁŁ but quicker since i won't have to send it away.
Any word on the 106?

Picked the alternator up from the Bosch specialist after refurb, needed a new rotor, bushes, rectifier and bearing, cost me 230 quid, more expensive than planned but still about 1/2 price of a new one. Hopefully get the car back today or tomorrow.
