longman datapost rst
just watched some old touring car footage, the richard longman car is qouted as having 300hp!!! is that realistic back in 86, if so what was the spec, has anyone ever looked it up on here?
id also like to know why the rst, cosworths and skylines had side exit exhaust pipes in touring car spec. they look cool but road cars with big power use a conventional ex setup.

300bhp was easily done in them days
Side exit exhausts were used back in the day as noise restrictions didnt happen back then ,

Nothing different today in racing, providing you can make it quiet enough for regs.
Most road systems are rear exit as they're off the shelf items rather than custom jobs. And most dont dare to be different anyhow.
And to get decent ground clearance with a side exit most cars need the sills etc notched a little.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
I'll find out what it was running in the week, as I'll be seeing my engine builder and he worked for Longmans for years until they closed down. Have talked about Datapost with him before and he worked on it back then.
Anything in particular you want to know or just the power it was running?

Was talking to Brett Sims today, one of the guys who built engines for Longmans and he said they used to run 300bhp for qualifying and to get the tyres up to temp. It had an adjustable boost control in the dash which they used to turn down to 250-275bhp for the races as it was more reliable. He remembers the Datapost cars well and thinks there's just 1 remaining original left now. Was also talking to Len, the guy that built the cars themselves.
Nice to stoke up a few old memories now and again. Any other info wanted please feel free to ask and I'll get an answer if possible.

Chap in the south owns one of the datapost cars, also has the brooklyn car as well. Had them both restored to as original as possible, I believe Richard Longman assisted with some bits

was intrested in the hp they had and more importantly how they managed it. in particular, engine management, turbo ect. would love to source some of the compomotive wheels thay ran. also considering a side exit exhaust as my scorpion is a tad rattly. not sure on the legality of side exit though, just in front of the drivers rear arch, rectangular in shape. the datapost car has to be one of the most iconic mk3's in the uk along with the brooklyn 16i.
