When I took my Focus for an MOT I stupidly left the sat nav in the window, the tester said that he'd failed it for my sat nav obstructing my view, as soon as I took it off in front of him he passed it.
So yes, it can be a fail.

ball joint and obstruction of view defo fail has been for years
if it was only air freshener we would of took it off
but as it was needing a ball joint it was going to fail anyway
we had a guy get points against him by VOSA for passing a car with air fresheners!

Does that mean I should take of my road tax from the front window as that is obstructing my view too?
I don't think I left in the the glove box to pass the MOT will cut it!!!! I even got pulled about 8 years ago when I had a Citroen and put in the middle of the window at the bottom (single wiper so worked better for me anyway) instead of the near side bottom corner.
this is all madness......

a tax disc and an authorised parking permit are allowed in zone B
when they started doing the stickers on the MOT sheets to put in your windscreen they themselves where a failure if in the wrong place lol

‘Official’ stickers that are not readily removable, such as vehicle licences, parking and access permits, are only a reason for rejection if they seriously restrict the driver’s view. ‘Official’ stickers should be taken to be any sticker that is used in connection with ‘road enforcement’, ‘security’ or ‘crime prevention’ matters. These include: Disabled Persons Badges/permits, Parking Permits, Licences and Vehicle Anti-Theft Scheme stickers issued by a Police Authority.

Where items are present in the driver’s view (such as a sat nav, air freshener etc) that would justify a Reason for Rejection, the tester may, at their discretion, remove the items prior to the inspection. This fact should be noted on an Advisory Notice.

When testing a vehicle presented with Zone A (drivers swept view area) "stickers or obstructions" I am now (as ALL MOT testers are as well) allowed (a recent addition to test criteria) to remove (if safe to do so) objects within Zone A and there is a special Advisory item I can select to show I have done this.
The end result being that the owner/presenter does not have to be messed around being asked to remove items after test and then have a retest.
Common sense prevails whilst I carry out any MOT
