Default Blown Cossie. Piston number 3. What are the options??

My mate has just blown his 4x4 Saph killing off piston number 3. He wants to get it back on the road but is on a budget. He has been told he could nikasil liner the bore and just replace the one piston, is this feasible?? Also he is a fully coded welder with 12 years experience, is it possible to build up the damaged bore with weld metal and then get it re-honed?? Any help would be appreciated as we are both complete novices in this area! ta

Strip the engine & find out the extent of the damage, depending on the severity & how old the engine is, it might be better to rebore all four cylinders & build a fresh engine, if the bore is too badly damaged then a single liner is an option. Depending on the severity of the melt, it may well have damaged the head as well?

Nikasil liners are mega money used on very high power engines, & not needed for your mates car. he will need a standard iron liner to repair his block for sensible money.

The most important thing to find out is WHY it melted, or it will just happen again once it's rebuilt.

as Wil says ^. Really need to strip it first to find out what's what. in fairness, if he's doing it on a budget it probably wont be long before he needs to do it again IMO

you also need to find out why it melted in the first place, map issue? injector issue? etc etc

Oh & building the weld up & re-honing is not the right way to do it, if even possible.

Engines been apart and thats the only damage as he's had a mate of his who's a mechanic look at it and it was him who suggested the one bore repair but I had not realised this was possible. It had a 2wd sensor on (not sure what sensor??) and we think this had something to do with it.

My mate's idea. I advised against it!

I wouldn't weld the bore mate, if it's too far gone get a good second hand block or get liners. I've got a block in my shed that had a melted piston hence y it's in the shed an not in my car lol
