Quick, unassuming cars..
I'll be looking for a new in a couple of months, and need something quicker than my Escort!
I fancy something a bit different, but has a good kick up it's arse!
Any ideas?
I'll be 20, so insurance is an issue, but if it's a big family barge instead of your common hatchbacks at my age, I'm guessing it'd be a bit cheaper on insurance?
Ben.

Goto be the T5 just for the noise!
Your right about barges being cheaper. Always had bigger cars and have always had cheaper insurance compared to my mates. At 19 I'm driving a 2008 Mondeo Titanium 1.8TDCi and insurance cost me Ł1,100.

I've thought about a Saab, they're silly cheap for what you get!

850 T5, You can always get an 850R T5 with four wheel drive although don't know how much these go for these days?
You may even be able to get a early 2000's S60/V70 T5 in your budget.

Saab aero are bargains with a remap
9-3 remapped 250bhp (270 with a 3" downpipe)- 205std
9-5 remapped 270/280bhp - 230or/250bhp std
You can get a remap on these for as little as Ł70 from a guy on the saab forums or he will send you a ecu unlocked and remapped for extra.

Admiral, although I was paying over Ł2000 for my 2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi (90bhp) previously but for some reasons the Peugeot 406 insurance is outright stupid latley.
Before that it was a 2003 Ford Focus 1.6 LX at Ł1400 and before that a 1998 Peugeot 406 1.9 DTurbo for Ł1200.
Nice to get my insurance down to a tidy amount again.

I heard those Fiat's were rather unreliable?
It's amazing how cheap these T5's go for!

not really, just a pig to work on cam belts on the 5pot 20v turbo i hear are a nightmare.
I wouldn't mind a v70 T5 estate but the D5 is the one i would go for there less of a performance car tho so not quite what you are wanting but a great all rounder, good on fuel, massive inside, luxurious and not exactly a slouch as standard.
i would get some insurance quotes first you maybe surprised what you can get, when i was 20 my chipped 200sx was 370 a year cheaper than my standard RS Turbo lol

I didn't realise the Fiat was a 5 pot motor?
I've seen loads of D5's around recently, seem to be pretty good cars.

You can assume insurance on a volvo t5 is cheap but mine isn't!
28 years old, 7 years ncb, nice area, 3k per year..... Just shy of Ł900!!
A BMW 330i touring was Ł300 cheaper to insure as anything over 10 years old is classed as a modern classic.
Gavin.

I've heard the VR6 is disappointingly slow?
Gallant is a good shout too.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
volvo d5, brilliant on fuel, around 185bhp standard, police chip to 240 with no mods (i have one) not bad on insurance even though high group compared to similar power. a sports model petrol won't do 55mpg + on motorway. could be a little out of price range unless your lucky

because i contract i could do with a decent car fuel wise and when i get some its an ideal family bus and remapped there even better.
I am potentially going to get a 3 month contract away and ill be getting a D5 to keep or getting a E320 CDI merc to use then strip and fit in my merc W114
For the OP if you looking for a small fun car a Clio 172 you carnt go far wrong there great little cars something bigger a 9-5 aero or a T5 all depends on you needs if you drive like a mad man dont expect to get in the high 20s with a 95 or T5.
For me personal i find running a cheap daily and having something else for commuting works out best once you work in fuel and insurance costs.

you won't go far wrong with a d5 mate but the earlier ones do have problems with engine management. 53 plate and above seem to have this sorted.
