Default Out with the YB, in with the Ford V8?

Hi all,

With all the V8 builds I seem to be stumbling on on here, I cant ignore than hankering after some V8 muscle, and that the cost and aggro of the YB tires me at times!

What are your thoughts on outing the YB and fitting a nice new V8 Ford crate engine? You can get these to make the 500 odd horses thart mine is spec'd too, and be completely relaible too! My folks live in the states and can sort one out for not a lot of dough.

A good idea, or do I need taking out and shooting?

Cheers

Weeksy

Can't see any reason not to. If you've got room.

Yb is a dinosaur now. Sell all the old crap and buy a equivalent power v8. 400 bhp will be plenty with matching tourque ( can keep original box and diff then).

Just toying with the idea at the moment.

It would have to have 500 horses as that's what it has now, but then as said the torque from that might upset the box and diff a little.

And it will still be a Cossie, just with 5 litres extra capacity!

Do I sell the yb complete or in parts do you reckon dudes?

Thanks

Why would you bother if your having the exact same power.. Imo it stops being a cossie when cosworth engine is removed.

a 427 7 litre checy will be massively more juicy that a yb, a yb will cruise at about 30 mpg, a 427 500 hp v8 will cruise at prob 15 mpg.

thats the beauty of a smaller engine, but 7 litres is gonna guzzle no matter how you cruise it, its like 3.5 ybs cruising lol

Nicer power delivery, loads of useable torque, and nice and reliable.

Spent so much on the yb now, and short of going to something bigger than it's t4 and making it even more unreliable and undriveable, there isn't much more I can do with it.

Cruise it?! I see your point on the capacity front, but this isn't isn't really that kind of car scooby slayer- it's a weekend toy! Never seen 30 mpg. Not even 20 my good man!

Thanks for your comments fellas

If its been built by a reptubale tuner then cant see why it would be unreliable? Upgrade to a gt range turbo you wont loose any driveabilty if anything gain some.

Why not? If you've got the skills to do it, then there's no reason why not.

Such a lazy engine too, force some air down it and it'd run rings around anything on the road!

Do it! I'd be inclined to use an LS2 rather than the Ford, its more compact. Also very good on fuel on cruise as it has a proper tall 6th gear

I was gunna say aren't the ford engines very wide.

I'd use a ls series engine aswell. With a mustang or supra rear diff and matting gear box.

Saying that. Supra engine and box would be nice.

Get something with a fat supercharger on it

No point doing half a job lol

F150 lightening 380bhp standard but a few choice mods and mapp ect sees a solid 500bhp?

Thanks for the info on the Ford engine size guys.

I have had this car since I was 19, and now aged 36, I jusrt couldnt part with it!

Most of the V8 beasts are a little too cumbersome for me, so thought the old sapphire with one would be just the ticket!

I actually do like the F150, and I know they make the power meddled with, but I think quite fancy a change from the boost craving.

Could be a nice YB parts sale coming up!

F150 lightening engine is a detuned ford gt engine so over 500bhp is easy to get with bolt on upgrades

And it's a ford engine?

sort of, the lightning only has 2 valves per cylinder, GT has 4, GT is alloy block and the lightning is cast iron, but still 500hp easy, but it won't fit under the bonnet of a sierra as its to tall, the 4.6 cobra from 03/04 is a better fit and same power

The new 5.0 are the daddy's.

The lightning 2v is an easy 500hp on a stock block. Gonna need a KB or Whippy 2.4 for big power.

The 330 CI 3v I have is good for 475RWHP on stock block with mear bolt on bits and a few hours on the rollers. RW numbers are around 23% lower than crank.

You'd probably find a 350 bhp N/A V8 would thrash a T4'd YB in the real world, massive torque from low down, it would be away before the wheezy 4 pot had got into it's stride. Acceleration and therefore grin factor is all down to torque and V8s have it in spades.

No 350 bhp V8 in the same body would have beaten my T4 car bud or even got close.

It would be a different matter entirely if you were both in 4th or 5th gear at 2k rpm and you both planted it at the same time!

Mine won't be 350hp but soon enough we will see how big power V8 compares.

I think the fact that 'real world' was mentioned and not brunters kinda means rods reply is pointless.

Rod what was the 50-90 in 4th gear in your car with a t4? That's more of a real world test surely?

Not if you're thrashing your car down a country lane, in the "real world" it's not, you'd be in a different gear and gone

Mines just done 500+ at a mear 10psi.

Peak of 11psi then held 10.4 all the way up.

That's Stock block, internals, heads, exhaust and fuel system

LFP or Metco for the replacable crank pulley. I got an LFP hub and 6.5 ring (Winter) and a 8.75" +4lb ring that's no good.

Have to be careful as some use the same belt that drives the alt, PS etc. you gonna need a snake bite then.
