Speed Camera Vans......

Grrr, just had a NIP through the post. 35 in a 30 zone. Fair dos I say, however look at the shitty way they're catching us........
Taken from the FAQ sheet that came with the NIP
Q This is all about raising money
All fines received go back to the Treasury. The Partnership including the Police do not receive any money from the fines
Whilst the above maybe true they have targets to meet and would go someway to explaining the position of the camera van, slap bang on the change over from a NSL (60mph) road to a 30mph zone.
A google photo of the positioning in question
The arrow shows my direction of travel, the X is where the camera van was sited and the sign ringed is the 30mph sign after a 60mph NSL road
![](http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/blu-scoob/ScreenShot2012-05-24at093444.png)
If thats not positioning the van to up the prosecutions then I don't know what is.............
Theres not even any residential buildings for at least another 1/2 a mile!
Now I remember quite clearly this day and I remember slowing down for this van and I suspect they may have clocked me before I entered the 30 zone and I will be asking for photographic evidence. If I have been clocked in the 30 zone (bear in mind I will have been slowing down at the time of being clocked) then I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm in the wrong and hope I get offered the speed awareness course instead of points!
I wouldn't mind so much if I was in my Impreza
but I was in my dead slow and stop 206 Derv!!
Typically the motorist is the easy target.

Totally agree mate, and no one is condoning speeding, however it's the message they send out about enforcing the limits and reducing accidents, then they place these cameras in places where it's essentially entrapment. I would not have a problem seeing them in a residential areas, near schools, or on really bad A or B roads with tight bends, but they're always in places where they know they can fuck you.

I remember they did similar with a builders van and had a camera in that. When they bought it, it was clean enough. It they splattered paint and stuff down the back to make it look "genuine"

I live in north wales and they are very sneaky! Ive seen that horse box several times, in the middle of no where in the hills, lots of bikers round here so easy pickings, they also put them after bends coming from a 60 to 30 so you have no notice and burrying the brake with a truck or something behind you is just dangerous. I also saw two recently on the same road, in the middle of nowhere just trying to catch people out for straying a couple over. Anoys me to with the cameras like the M6 gantry ones that change, 40 to 30 to 60 to 30 your always left thinking what was the last one saying 30 , 40, 50 or 60, instead of focusing your attention on the task in hand DRIVING! then you worry for the next few weeks its not on. If you want to fight it this is what you need to request from them because you are adement you have not been speeding because you recall this day you remember the incident (probably not the best word) you were doing exactly 30 having and were fully aware of the van or something like that
1. Full service history of camera
2. When the camera was brought on line
3. how long since the camera had a service/calibration
4. the qualifications of the opperator
5. was the van parked in a DESIGNATED police layby
also clarify the 10% plus 2 rule
hope this helps

I was under the impression the camera van had to be marked as it's officially a 'Safety Camera' van, so hiding it in a horse box is against their own rules. Also, if there are no roads signs warning speed cameras are in use, I'm sure you can contest it there also.

Where I live the speed camera van always is parked getting people speeding when going out of the village into either a 40 or 50. Whilst I accept that people are speeding it is a natural reaction to accelerate when you are leaving a 30 MPH. They never have the cameras lined up on people going into the 30 MPH of the village. LANCASHIRE POLICE. Also they park on a bridge coming over the river Ribble towards Penwortham at the edge of the 30 MPH same tactic. Just a money making scheme and not a road safety one in my opinion

If you contest it you will have to plead guilty. They will then (more likely than not) find you guilty and fine you a lot more than if you just copped for it. There is a chance that you could get expert legal representation to get off, but that too would cost way more than the original fine.
Sadly, they know they've got us over a barrel for 'minor' speeding infringements like this.

one got me, 63 in a 30
pleaded guilty by post, just waiting for the case to be heard to find out my punishment now but if you can't do the time - don't do the crime.

I'd contest it and ask them to prove conclusively that you were in the 30mph zone and not outside of it. That picture imo isn't conclusive and their location that they've put on the picture could be anywhere on that road.

If it was me I would. His choice at the end of the day but it's either you contest it or sit there with your thumb up your arse and take the fine and points for doing 35mph outside a 30 zone. Great logic.

Is that the only picture they sent you - it doesn't even show the road, let alone markings!?
I suspect the camera inside the van is fixed firmly in one position aiming exactly where they want it to, thus it would be quite unlikely it is targeting the road outside the 30 zone -but you never know!
With the van being parked outside the 30, and the photo being quite inconclusive as to your position on the road i'd be sorely tempted to fight it myself...
If you go back and take a few pictures of the road from the approximate position of their van you should be better placed to make a call on whether there is enough doubt to contest it?

Be careful fighting. I am aware of several cases where the evidence to prove innocence with regards to a motoring offence has been substantial and the magistrates have gone against the motorist.
It would be right to fight it but from what I've seen and heard not worth the risk in doing so.

The distance is shown on the pic received by the OP - 96.7m.
This is going to sound like teaching people to suck eggs, but IMO if you come round a bend and are going too fast to slow down for a change in speed limit, then you're also going too fast to stop in an emergency.
Other cues act as warnings for speed limit changes, or the possibility that something will be in your path; for example in that ^ picture the speed limit sign may normally be obscured but there's the junction warning sign (a junction on or just after a bend) and there are rooftops visible over the hedges in the near-distance. The location sign looks as though it's brown, usually associated with "attractions." Those are three warning signs that you should perhaps slow down in case of dawdling or turning traffic, and should also expect a change in speed limit.
If you've got somebody tailgating/close behind you then again the correct course of action is to slow down, as this gives you more chance and room to brake for two if required.

Looking on the web site http://www.gosafe.org/en/content/cms...wareness-cour/ which covers the Welsh SCPs it appears they offer driver education courses for "low level" offenders, which at least means you don't gain points.

Very surprised the vans can get you moving away.
I'll ask my sis inlaw about this next time i see her. She used to work in the camera vans. She used to say they rarely used to use the front camera but was always under the impression it had to be on approach to take a accurate reading as they do have to take 2 shots

The rooftops you can see are agricultural buildings and there are no residences in view for at least another 1/2 mile after the 30 sign.
The location sign is brown to inform you its a Market town and its another mile before you arrive there. All the place names for some obscure reason where I live are brown.......
I was pointing out the signs are badly positioned (and I've noticed that a lot round here!) and really the should be displayed before the place name sign imho. If they wanna prosecute then the signs should be up to scratch. One rule for us and another (lack of) rule for them!
