Identifying rs500 block
I have aquired a 205 block which has small core plugs 20mm in diameter , I have no gg engine number stamped and it is blank above the water pump, there is also no stamping for the bores next to the dizzy either, it is a ford cast block, and the head that came of it is a 2wd 3 bolt stat housing , with casting starting v86 which I believe is rs500 , my question is obviously with out the gg engine number it's obviously not from a car or a spare built engine but is it a proper 500 spec block, there is an engine number stamped which starts JL which I believe is sept 88
Any help please?

If its a 205 block with small core plugs then it will be a rs500 block just probably not from original rs500 road car if no number. Would have thought many were bought from ford before 200 block was available, if the head is genuine it will be dowelled to the inlet manifold, although I don't think ports or valves are any different to std 2wd head. Good basis for a high powered engine though if all ok.

I'm stripping it for inspection tomorrow at work so ill check for the inlet dowels , with there being an engine number it would be interesting to know what car it came from

I just read the links, it's a little to 'open' as to whether the head is a 500 one untill I check a couple of other things but the block is certainly looking towards being a 500 one however one thing that I never questioned is the lug under the alt bracket mount hasn't been machined, I'm taking that as its just a rs500 replacement block

If the lugs not been machined off then it will be a bare replacement block which explains no YBD number as they came blank.
Is there a web coming off the top most bolt hole for the alternator bracket mounting, if so then its the YBF race version of the 500 block as we found out recently (I have a new one of these).
The 500 head is just a late 2wd head in essence, valves are exactly the same as any cosworth, and if its from a road 500 then the number should be YNO 415 on the front and you will see some machining work in the cast face of the inlets and a pair of dowel holes, if its a replacement then the head number will be YNO 627.

So in honesty is it worth a bob or 2 I like to have a spare but if it's worth good money am I best selling it and just buying a spare 200 block which is what I run ? Or are they similar monies?

Depends if you need the money raised from the sale of a 500 block and buying a 200 block, I keep rare parts as if I do sell them will find it hard to replace if I change my mind and need something. Remember it will always be worth more than a 200 block as long as it is stored correctly, probably as good as money in the bank.

big difference....one that needs liners is well fooked so to say....
one that just needs a rebore to .20 is worth much more.

Burtons want 3k for a new one, so I would say a min of £1500 plus for a standard bore used one and less if its close to final bore or needs lining.
Paul L no doubt has a better idea of current prices
One of the owners of a genuine 500 bhp plus original race 500 has just had his block linered and rebuilt ready to race this year by Geoff Page so they can be salvaged.

thats interesting.....might put 1 on the shelf then.....
it's on the backlog...my rs1600 mk1 comes first as it's a quick build once back from the painters. then im gonna get the 500 shell back a few weeks later....
i'd say realistically after summer until i get to put that together, baby #2 is due beginning of april and then my missus wants to do extended summer holidays....

Was at Burtons yesterday and grabbed a catalogue and noticed the RS500 blocks last night flicking through it,
Says their thick wall motorsport blocks machined from original castings.
