Default Will it make a difference?

Ok, so I've got a mk4 escort with a 2.0 zetec on bike carbs with a 4 branch and a full ashley system. I'm getting to that point in my life where i'm starting to get a little embarrassed driving a car with a loud exhaust through a lovely quiet little estate. If i was to refit the standard back box would this be enough to lower the volume of the exhaust or will it simply change the tone?

well you instantly get labeled a boy racer if you've got a loud car rather than a enthusiast don't you....
