I'm 6ft 4 mate so you'd manage I guess!
I'm not saying it's comfortable on long distance but it's a sports bike so doesnt need to be. I did 400 miles in a day last year. I was pretty fucked when I got off but do-able.
Cheers. It's a decent colour which doesn't always show up. It has a cool speckle through it. When I bought it I couldn't see that in the showroom so when I took it home and saw it in the sun I was like wtf!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
wanting to do this myself. never had a bike licence though ive done trackdays/couple of club races and when i was younger (didnt give a fuck) used to ride my race prepped bikes to bike nights
since ive grown up i think ill be sensible enough not to take ridiculous chances like i used to. just to be able to have a ride out in warm summer evenings, not ''test my own luck'' by blind overtaking ect. very naughty.
fuel economy on any modern bike should be reasonable. if you want a useable bike, DONT get a two stroke. my race bike (kitted kr1s) drinks avgas at about 15mpg and castrol a747 at 20 pound a litre. depending on bugdet id go for a steel framed cbr600. one of the best do anything bikes of all time. 150mph, multiple race winning pedigree or/and comfortable enough to commute/tour on. 1k will turn up a sound bike. if your a big lad on a budget, the bandit is worth a look. the 600 is a waste of time but the 1200 is a torque monster and fast enough to give your neck muscles a work out. also ideal for the budding wheelie king.

I know you said no mopeds but its much cheaper i did it a few years ago and it was costing me £15 a year tax £50 a year insurance £90 for cbt and £5 every 100 miles in fuel (also it doesnt have to be a moped on a cbt you can drive a 125cc bike to)

The weather and this thread have put me mad for bikes, whats your opinions on a Ducati monster 696+ or a 796 as a first bike? I have my heart set on the noise and looks. How quickly could you get a full licence?

In response to how long it takes to get license. I took theory in August and passed test in November, but you can do it much much quicker than that, I was held up by work... I know of people who've fitted it all in to a couple of weeks

DAC was about £600 up here a couple of years ago, thats your theory, CBT, 5 2 hour lessons, Mod 1 and Mod 2 tests.
Kit yourself out with decent gear from the start and it will last you a few years. Helmet £200+, Gloves £35+, Leathers £200+, Textiles if you plan on riding in all weathers £200+, Boots £100+....
Then theres a bike, depending on what you want say you'll spend £1500+ on something
Then MOT is £30, Tax £40 for 6 months and probably something like £350 - £500 for your insurance depending what you buy etc.
Initial outlay for the lot can be done for about £3k but Id say more like £3.5k as a more realistic price for it.
Then theres the running cost, depending on your mileage it can be cheap as chips or just as expensive as a car. We can go out on a Sunday and do £50-60 of juice in, or you could fill the tank and it would last you a week if you just used it for local pottering about. Either way in summer, being out in the country on the bike in the sun is far better than being there in the car...... best thing I ever did was get a bike.
And Chop is right, you'll wonder why you used to spunk so much time and money in old Fords. I think it every time I work on my car, "Why am I pissing about with this old shitter when I could be out on the bike"

Bikes are so much cheaper. It's not even close in terms of comparison. Youc an even use Normal Unleaded fuel
Aha I think I knew you had that but had forgotten. How is it? It's not the prettiest bike but I like them and would like a shot. Are they comfortable/roomy? More so than an out and out sports bike?

Comfy as fook mate. R1 after 200 miles = walking like John Wayne, Hayabusa after 200 miles = "shall we do another 100 miles?"
Very capable bikes on the twisty stuff too, once you get used to the extra weight and length of them. Its not often you will come across many out and out sports bikes that can leave you unless you get into the tighter stuff. 2 up riding is a pleasure more than a chore too, I fucking hated it on my R1 and now I dont mind it in the slightest and with 2 people on you can still lean it over to the edge of the front tyre on the bends and play when you're out. To be honest the R1 rarely leaves the garage now since I got that, and 2 other mates with Busas are exactly the same. One has an R1 too and the other has a Blade.
If you're ever down this way you're welcome to a blast on mine bud. At first you'll probably think its crap and heavy and wont corner but the more you learn it and get used to it the more you'll like it.

Out of many, we are one.
With anything, its going to be expensive at first... How many lessons did you have in a car before you passed? They were £18 a pop when I was doing mine - and I had to do a fair few to get rid of my bad habits
I've had to do two CBT's - was riding a '90 RXS100 (2 Stroke) for a few years after coming off MX (Had a few KX's and a RM)...
Then when I returned to riding I did another CBT along with my MOD 1 and MOD 2 (Had to become legal at some stage). The second time it was roughly £130 for the CBT, MOD 1 & 2 came close to £500 plus theory.
Gear, well to be honest where do you draw the line? Lids can cost anything from £30+.. As others have said, you "generally" get what you pay for. My Suomy lid cost me £299 at BMF. Shows are usually good for deals - Places like HG have deals on various times of the year so its worth picking up one of their catelogues to see what things cost. I think theres a "Sharp" test that test all helmets and give them ratings - with any makes theres good and bad.
Tax wise is something like £77 for the blade for 12 months, or for say a GPZ500S its roughly £50. Mot is £30, insurance can vary - I'm paying £165 TPFT with two years NCB and the ability to ride any other bike. Think my old man is paying something stupid like £85 a year on a hornet/blade.

I'm just writing here so I can find the info again..
I am liking the idea of a bike, just the security for me is a downer, I stay between 2 places, both of which don't have anywhere to hide a bike.. Oh well!

When I move to oz I intend to put in a LOT more miles on the bike! I've been toying with how I could replace it and be comfier without a total lack of performance. I do like VFR's but too much of a compromise. I've even thought about things like CB1000R.
BUT a hayabusa would probably tick all the boxes.

Aye liuke I said it's not pretty.
BUT
It's a total UTTER weapon that you can also cruise on. In the right colours it looks fine. I quit like black tbh.
I'm not busa geek but as far as I can picture in my head they barely changed the look over the years. Shame really
Im currently on bikesales.au pricing them

Wahay!! I've lost my Virginity!!
I've been looking at insurance prices for CBT + riding a Honda CBR125 and I'm getting quotes of £1300/year, is this right?
Quote for full licence + riding a GSXR400 is £300ish. Initial bike costs would be the same whether it be a CBR125 or a GSXR400, and my aim is to get the GSXR after a year of riding the CBR, so would I be better off spending the £1000ish difference on insurance on getting the full licence?
Might sound like a no brainer, but the lack of experience with a road bike puts me off - had a PW80 when I was young and that's my only bike experience. And I have a bad feeling that the insurance on the GSXR would end up being higher than the £300 quote cos that sounds off as well considering no experience.
