Default Selling number plate

Im sure this has come up alot, so I apologise in advance if it has ..

Guy has offered to buy the number plate off my XR2.

How do I find out how much its worth?
And how do I go about it legally?

Also, I will be putting different plates onto the car .. (from another XR2 which I bought and broke, I have the number plates and the logbook but the shell has gone now so dont have the chassis numbers etc)

Is what I am planning on doing legal? Or is it fine to do but going to be a nightmare?

Thanks in advance

The car you broke needs to be mot'd to be able take the plate off unless you put it on retention. Also if the plate on your car is the original plate it can't be taken from the car.

It's not illegal to transfer the plate from your car,nor is it illegal to put another plate from your old car onto your present car.

What is illegal is the way you plan to go about it by the sound of things. Is the old plate on retention or are you just going to stick the plates on and use the old logbook that goes with them?

I have no idea how to go about it.
I know that you can't just swap plates about.. I just assumed it would be as easy as informing dvla and insurance etc..

I guess it only really works with private plates?
Looks like its going to be Alot of hassle for no real gain.

The original plate that's on his cannot be transferred to another vehicle it's the cars forever.
I have friends that's fell into the trap when buying a new car to ask for a certain plate when preordering their new car but once registered from new it cannot be transferred to another vehicle and goes with the car.

Im going to leave it now I think.
Its to much hassle, I already have to get the DVLA to change a few things (colour, 1.6 to 2 litre) so asking them to change plates about and chassis numbers etc is going to be alot of hassle I think.

Cheers anyways
