Default 4x4 saphs - any good?

I miss my old 2wd saph badly and am considering another cossie.. But after spending a lot of time lately in Robs_frst EVO 6 i am in need of something that really handles.

Plus i abused my 2wd saph too much whereas i wouldnt be able to do that in a 4x4 which is a good thing. altho 2wd is more fun lol.

questions are..

How do they handle in comparison to evo's and scoobys? I know they are not as advanced with fancy AYC like the evos. but if on coilys, good tyres, 6 deg rear beam would it do well?

Also transmission.. as long as i dont launch all the time will it hold out on a T34 set up around 360ish bhp? I hear thats the max you can run through them before your risk blowing 3rd gear.

Deep down i know i'd do better with evo or scoob but I love cossies. plus the classic insurance is always appealing compared to insuring jap metal.

I wouldn't have another 4x4 tbh mate.

They're not bad but I think an Evo or scoob would murder one on the twisties!

Where was my phone call the other day Mr?!!!

Phones make calls both ways you know

Problem is it will sit in the garage and not come out much. so if im paying Ł200 odd quid insurance for cossie thats cool. but if its Ł800 odd for an evo or scoob then im throwing money away.

Plus i even bought an RS private plate today as the guy accepted a cheeky offer of mine. I dont even own an RS right now

EVO's are awesome cars and deep down its what i want. but i will always love cossies and it will sit in the garage happily for little money unlike the evo's and scoobs.

I know im better off with a well set up 2wd but i really want to get into the world of 4x4. and escos' are too expensive lol

I think mine is great and i think the grip is good too. Ive had the rear wheels spinning a few times and i think if it wasnt for the car been.4x4 it would of been side ways a few times. The gearboxes are ok as long as you dont launch them from a standing start.

Why not buy a car thats so shite you never drive it & then you can leave it without insurance in the garage. In fact an MOT failure or a writeoff will fit the bill get one for Ł10.
You ask what 4x4 saffs are like & are told they are shockingly bad & yet you are going to buy one anyway . Your finances seem to suggest any Cossie is out of your means.

Anyone who tells you one car handles better than everything probably hasn't owned/driven anything better and doesn't know the difference

Best car I have ever driven is an V10 R8, now EVERYTHING feels like it handles shit in comparison to that

Over the last 15 years i have owned many cosworths , two of them were escort and saph 4x4 cars .
Both i hated with a passion , the ford 4x4 system is horrid in every department .
Obviously these are my own views , but many people agree .
I currently own a 2wd cosworth

The only issue i have is with the AA

She's never broke down on the road in 5 years "membership Ł130 per year"

I dont even get a discount for not using there services

But the Grin factor is worth the prices i pay for the drive

Shes used every day all year round

A 4x4 saff with konis ahmeds adj tca's and an Scs beam on stage 3 would be perfect. My Es cos handles just as good as any Evo

Your comment is a prime example of why everyone thinks your a cunt.

At what point have i said I'm actually going to buy a 4x4 saph? Being a ford boy im merely swayed towards another atm.

Look at the cars I own in my signature.. do u really think id struggle to own a saph?

I've owned rs' for the past 8 years. Granted I've not been into cossies for 120 years like u hav u old fuck, but I know a thing or two about running them.

Cheers for the constructive comments so far peeps, on the mobile at work so will reply later.

agreed, i never got round to the 6 deg beam, but had everything else, plus solid rear mounts and it was spot on, its like any car though, you have to adapt your driving style to suit the car, if you can do that, you will find a 4x4 saph handles fine

Feel better now ? No real need for that is there plus I dont think everyone feels the need to sink about eighty grand into a car or is it "just because you can"

Any joy on the group buy on those Bonnet bra's yet?

My plan is to convert mine to 2wd, purely because IMO the front end is so weak and unreliable.

I cant say anthing about compairing handling as I have only ever had a XR3i Cab and a Passat. But I have been in a scooby and EVO as a passenger and have to say also being a passenger in a cossie with a 6 degree ream beam, it matches up to them well handling wise.

Every 6 months something goes wrong on my 4x4, be it a CV joint (ended up being the engine mounts causing it). Front diff, drive shaft going or front propshaft hitting the exhaust. I have basically had enough. And I dont launch mine or boot it around like an idiot.
My worry though is buying a T5 box and fitting and finding it to be a fooked one and forking out for another one.

Always wondered what a decent handling escos was like. After my last Escos lowered on Koni springs was not very impressed.

Obviously they aren't going to fair great compared to modern cars, but they can handle well and driven properly they are still quick. Although i do agree the front end can be a weak point but i've found mine to be ok as long as it's looked after properly and it's safe to say it gets some serious abuse.

was doing better in twisties than an evo,i was happy with that,
konis,bayjoo springs,6 degree beam,solid beam mounts,poly diff mount,55lbs siemens,t34.48,32 psi boost,225/50r15 tyres,
have done about 60 thousand miles with her still standard factory fitted headgasket and gearbox etc,
have never really had any major issues with anything,
never do wild launches tho,

but yes they can be made to handle as good as jap,but also down to driver aswell suppose,

They're ok, but when really pushed they start to understeer and kangaroo a little, quite positive on flowy smooth stuff, mine would still get very out of shape and pull some fairly big power slides.
Was running an msd380 package, but on a .48, so probably 360-370, gearbox and standard clutch lasted 4 years and about 15,000k of grief without any breakages.

Had both 4x4 and 2wd ,
Escort cossie was 4x4 and really didn't like it compared to my 2wd saff . Had the escort 2years and saff 13 so far and still got it . Had both at same time so can compare and 2wd all day long

Personally I like the 4x4 set up in the Cosworths, love the 66/34 split, so it efffectivly handles like a rear driver with more out and out traction. You don't get any extra GRIP, you get more consistant performance on damp/rough/unpredictable surfaces.

Any cosworth 2 or 4 wheel drive needs a fair chunk of cash spent on the chassis to make it handle, but most people throw 400Bhp into them and expect 20 year old bushes & dampers to handle the extra, then moan they don't drive very well!

Spend wisely in the right places and you will have a great handling car that isn't anywhere near as bad as people make out. I still rate the 2wd saff as the best drive, follwed by the 4x4 saff, and I currently own an Escort Cossie and a Saff 2wd. Saff drives nicer than the escort IMHO due to it having a lower COG.

Spend on a decent 6° rear beam, solid mounts, adjustable TCA's and a good set of dampers, and you will have a fantastic car. Look at Rainbums vids of his recent track day, he murdered EVERYTHING in his path!!

360Bhp on a std gearbox is bingo time, it might last years, it might last one boost oull in 3rd gear! Launching a std box is not a problem, as long as you take the slack up by "winding up" the drivetrain before you drop the clutch, it is high torque in 3rd gear that kills them. Front diff you can sort with a Ł20 steel plate, rear diff will be fine. Don't run the car too low or you will rip front shafts to bits, but you won't run it too low will you, as they handle like crap when they are lowered excessivly.

Rod, cheer the fuck up! Cossies have bags of character, just look after it and you will be fine. Go for it I say!

Some wicked responses here guys. going out now but plenty for me to digest when next at the computer.

Think its gonna be one of those cars i will need to be taken out in before decide what to do. I know first hand what a 400 bhp evo is capable of. and first hand what a 370bhp 2wd saph is capable of. I want something inbetween.. so was hoping the 4x4 saph would be that.

Sounds like its pot luck what your transmission will end up taking though lol.

cossies are bAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD! NEA 20YEARS OLD AND WILL STILL DESTROY TODAYS CARS! buy a 4wd saff more than 350bhp if its the right set up it will destroy your average jap! cossies have betttter gearing compared to scoobys and evos that tend to run out of puff .. a good t34 cossie is a quick car mate go for it!
