Means minor damage that the insurers decided to pay out on rather than repair. This is the sort of damage like on my Mums 2i when it was shunted. Only damage to the car was the bumper. But they tried to write it off. Had we let them it would have been Cat D.

Don't dismiss it without looking it over properly and finding out what damage was recorded as it may be very very light

Yeah my car is a cat D due to damage to the rear quarter panel before i bought it!

Its nothing major, but look into it just incase, i spoke to the DVLA and did a HPI check aswell just on the safe side

Im guessing the reason for the cat D on my car is that the cost to repair a rear quarter is huge and finding a panel a few years back was like finding a needle in a haystack! so the insurers decided to cat D it.

i think my car will be cat d this week,i had sum1 drive across the front
of me and they damaged the n/s/f wing and indicator and also ripped
the bumper off,one of the estimators at work put it through the
computer and it came up that it will cost £1500 to repair and paint
the new parts and also wheel align the car aswell

iirc Cat d means the car has been damaged but the insurers HAVE chosen to repair, so not what you'd call a full write-off as such, so this can be any form of damage really, i've had a couple of cat d cars, been ok for me, you won't get much when you sell but you'll buy it cheap anyway. cat c is where the vehicle has been substantially damaged and the insurers did NOT repair, so a full write-off, which is normally on the logbook as well. The main thing is to get the car checked over properly as it can range from very minor to moderate damage. (cat b=break only)

Also worth bearing in mind when insurance companies write cars off they quote for genuine parts / panels / paint and labour at an (expensive) insurance garage, whereas you could take it to bill the bodgher who does a perfectly good job for half the price. im not saying you should go for it but there are savings to be made.

that aint good then if mine all goes through mine will probably be
cat c then, not that bothered cause the cars now going to be stripped
soon and everything is going into a 2 door estate but was thinking
about keeping it and buying a damaged erst to use for the estate
then selling it when the estate is done

Also timing plays a part too mate , if its going to take a long time to source parts for a car they will just pay out and have the claim dealt with ASAP

cat A: whole vehicle goes to scrap no parts etc can be sold on
cat B: car cannot go back on the road but parts can be sold off
cat C: the car is uneconomical to repair (new genuine panels and parts etc). car can be bought and repaired and will then need a VIC, before you can put it on the road
cat D: car is not necessarily uneconomical to repair but cost could escalate if any problems occur after repair, can be bought and repaired and will just need mot and tax to be back on the road
