Hi I have just phoned a breaker yard about buying a ECU and they told me that even if I do replace it I still have to go to ford to get it remapped is this correct has anyone on here had this done?

I would have thought if it was an identical to yours, as in the CODE on it is the same, then it should work.

The mk5/6 Escorts had various ECU's over their production, but each new ecu had a different code, AFAR A1gb, Osma etc etc, and as long as you got another ecu with the same code, you where ok.

What car is this for?

AS newer ECU may have to have the keys 'mapped' to them.
