Default semi slicks like r888s etc may be illegal november 2012 !

i read an article earlier i just cant find the link now, it was though an evo forum.

apparantly theres gonna be changes to regulations for tyre manufacture in eu and its looking likely that all current track day slicks ie r888, pirelli corsa etc will all not meet up to the new requirements for minimum wet performance !

And it will be easier for driving to track and not having a different set if it chucks it down.

bugger
I have used yokohama ao48's for a few years now on the road and track and they are perfect for my needs,i can't be arsed to change wheels at a trackday, but yes they are shite in the wet,but i think its more the compound is hard when cooled by the water that makes them slippy.

Are they going to do the same with motorbike tyres too, such as the Pirelli Diablo Corsa? There's no difference between the two in my opinion.

I hope this is just rumour as my kit car is intended to be ran on R888's and will only be on the road in the summer months, so don't want a normal road tyre!

No great surprise to be honest.

The problem with these is, all those morons who aren't clever enough to realise that you can't drive like a pillock with them on if it's wet.

Was bound to happen eventually!

I don't find tyres like that too bad in the wet.....i did drive on ice in them once and that was awful. But for most wet weather or greasy roads, i personally perfer them.

It has the full 8mm tread depth for a start instead of the 5mm of the 888...

Has slightly more tread pattern than the A048 Yoko/Toyo 888

good point, less sales, less production = more cost per tyre.

Seen a rumour that if your airbag light doesnt work correctly, that will be an MOT fail too so keeping original steering wheel and pretensioners for test time might be needed as well. Don't know how true it is so don't go quoting me lol.

I'm not sure what the new regs would say about it not having an airbag at all. Not sure how it could fail for the airbag system not checking itself if there is no airbag system

Think it's like a centre brake light, if it's there originally then it's got to work but I'm not 100% as stated above. Still haven't seen official clarification, it was on another forum.Think I'll hold fire on the wheel and harnesses and put up with CG locks until I fully cage/track spec it so it has to be trailered.

Its a little known fact that you can use non e marked tyres on the road and they will fly through an mot as long as they meet min tread width and depth, be interesting to see if they change the mot laws at the same time otherwise you will still be able to use the old stock tyres on the road anyway

In that case as long as they still make them (r888 etc) and they have 1.6mm tread they will still be perfectly legal ??????????????

They have less weight but also have a lot less tyre on the road! A tyre like the Diablo Corsa has even less tread than a normal road tyre, try stopping on this on a wet greasey road!

Not all cars are massively heavy either, mine's only 450kg, with four decent contact patches on the road. I'll be unhappy if i'm forced to not use R888 tyres, they may not be the best tyre for year round use but for a summer toy they're perfect!

they work very well i had them on my r1! never locked the front wheel when braking plus bike tyres have been like that for a very long time so meet legal requirements also when a bike brakes hard all the weight is on the front wheel so there is a lot of grip and i havent even started on bikes with abs

The current regulation is one of those daft ones where its illegal for a manufacturer to sell a road tyre unless its e marked, but it not illegal to use a non e marked tyre on the road, so non e marked race/rally tyres can be used and will pass an mot as long as they have the correct min width and depth of tread. No doubt the new rule will follow the same system.

Thats 100% true, mine just passed its test a few weeks back, my airbag light is flashing (common on MK2 Mondeo's), and the i got an advisory for it, and the tester said, next year, a flashing airbag light is a test failure. like i told him, wont flash when i take the bulb out will it
