Default "laid up" car insurance...

whats the bleddy deal here, and does anyone have experience with it?

Im going to have a car, fully taxed and mot'd that I'm not going to be driving that will be going to a new owner...just not yet.

Now these new rules mean that if a car is taxed and mot'd it has to be insured (something about continual insurance and getting uninsured cars off the road)

I dont want to SORN it, because the next person who gets the car wont be able to drive it away, they'll have to get insurance, then tax it etc etc.

My current insurance on this car is fully comp, and runs until March.

I know how much it will be to insure the car i will be using if i change over my insurance policy, but are there any companies around that specialise in laid up cover?

Just making it difficult for people to keep cars now

how does it work though? you have to be insured to drive, yet your insurence doesnt cover driving?

Aslong as the car is on private land surely you dont need to insure it?

ive been doing that, and every quote ive tried to do online wont do it. I am not going to move the car from where it sits, im quite happy to pay for 3rd party insurance for the week or so it'll be here..if i SORN it just makes it more difficult for the next owner.

See, I thought that. But Daddy Welsford the fountain of all knowledge alerted me to this gem

Can the new owner not insure the car?? I assume you'll not be holding onto the car for any length of time... so as long as they've paid for the car, the V5 will be getting transferred to their name therefore it's their problem now.

yes but the fundamental problem is that for private car sales, if its uninsured, it has to be SORN which means tax disc is invalid and must be returned for a refund. Hence you buy the car, even if you have insurance, you cant drive it away straight away youd need to trailor it.

footman james do fairly cheap laid up cover but if it's just your run of the mill every day car then you'll struggle as most places only specialist/classic stuff laid up.

from a conversation i was having with a broker the other day if the car is only going to be stood without insurance for a week then i wouldn't worry about it, he was saying it takes 7 days before it even flags up as being uninsured and even then all they do is send a letter out stating that on the MID it's showing a uninsured vehicle which you then have x amount of days to respond to so it's not like after a day you get a fine through the post.
