Default Its definitely a bearing ..but which one ?

I have an 02 Mondeo 2.5 V6 Zetec S with 88,000 miles on the clock. Within the last month or so it has developed a worn wheel bearing sound that I thought was coming from the near side front wheel. I had a new bearing pressed in and it has made no difference.

The sound seems to get quieter as I turn the steering to the left and is more noticeable while driving at between 30 and 40 mph. This would indicate to me a wheel bearing but this is not the case. I have seen some forums with this problem outlined but no one seems to have an answer, most say its a wheel bearing or tyres but I know it is not.

This is going to start getting expensive changing things to see if it works and I have gone down that road before, so if anyone knows exactly what is wrong, your advise would be so much appreciated.

I am leaning towards the gearbox now but I am not sure why this noise would go away while turning left. Maybe it is the bearing on the off side drive shaft ?

Thank you for any help

also check the tyre isnt unevenly worn, as that causes a noise the same as a knackered wheel bearings. had that on plenty of vehicles at work, and usually its cheaper tyres that go like it

Well the noise gets quieter as you turn the steering to the left so I am thinking that it isn't the drivers side wheel bearing. I don't think its the tyres either, they are expensive Yokohama tyres roughly half worn now. We had a look at them when they were off the car recently and they look OK.

Jack up car so you can wobble each wheel 1 at a time. if it is a front wheel get sone one to hold the steering wheel still. dodge bearing usually have play in them where they have started to colapse.
