You can get serial to USB adaptor's, but there a pain in the arse. Get an old laptop off ebay with a serial port.

lots of usb ones wont work

the expresscard ones are actually USB! theyre not the sam thing as the oldskool PCMCIA cards.

you want to either buy a tried and tested USB adapter or use a laptop witha real serialport

PCMCIA card is essentially the same as having a com port directly on the board, if that isnt working then there is a fault somewhere in the config.

As Jim says, make sure its a PCMCIA card NOT an express card though, they look similar but are totally different in how they actually connect to the hardware.

God you are hard work, you kept asking me by text/phone what to use, and I was SO clear that it needs to be a fucking PCMCIA card so why go and buy something different!

Worth knowing the exact make of a USB adaptor that DOES work specifically with emerald like that then Ade, as most wont.

The emerald supplied one works perfect on 4 different laptops that I've used it on, the one shown works perfect.
I find the lappys seem to "grab" the sync easier if the ignition is already turned on when opening the software on the lappy, then do a refresh hits the mark every time then.

I always thought you had more manners than that. In my experience the problem occours with all serial port to USB adaptors, and the more modern the laptop, the bigger the problem seems to be. The Emerald, although a little slow to map, is a good sturdy ecu, with good features, and value for money. The support from Dave Walker is excellent, which can't be said for some suppliers charging 3 and 4 times the price

get the thing fitted with a USB port ala vipec etc. and pay a company to overhaul the UI and make it friendlier and it'll be a fine ECU

as it standard the thing is a nightmare to get working and set up!

chip, remember the time we were out in my old sierra mapping and you hit the "upload map" button.

the car quickly ground to a halt on a roundabout and we spend 20minutes un-bricking the ECU

I wish people would stop reminding me about cars ive mapped on emerald, ive been having therapy to try and forget

As you say though, the core product is all right, just needs someone who actually understands how to write computer software involved and specifically user interfaces, involved in the project which it CLEARLY hasnt ever had so far.

my comment was nothing at all to do with the ECU itself just the software you use to map it.

The op asked about ECU's and laptop's basically. Serial to USB is a pain in the arse, not only with Emerald, but many more. Some are now putting USB connections on the ECU, why has this taken so long, it's not as if USB are the latest technology

John, as this is Paul, the source of the problem will be inbetween the chair and the keyboard.
