It's a data link from the ECU, not a dedicated tacho input.
Same for the speedo.
Plenty of people have tried to drive the cluster from other non ECU inputs and failed.

Well i do have a fair bit of scope to play with here , im using all the original focus loom and ecu aswell as a pectel T2 ecu controlling the engine . im also using a coil pack (focus item) aswell - which i believe is what feeds the focus ecu/tacho....

You'd need to do something like put an output into the Focus ECU from the Dissy or crank sensor also keep the twisted data link pair connected between the ECU and Cluster and power up the Focus ECU to fool the ECU into putting a tacho output out to the cluster.

Thats exactly what i had planned!!!

wonder if i can piggy back the focus loom coil pack plug onto the pectel /cosworth coil pack plug (which is currently plugged into the coil pack and working perfectly) just to get a signal to the focus ecu ???

The Focus coil pack plug has an output on it from the ECU, you need an input into the
ECU.

The simplest way would be to use the Focus crank sensor and pick up a pulse off the Cosworth crank somehow.

I've just weighed in all my old Focus engine and surplus bits so I don't know whether the crank sensor is looking for 1 pulse per rev or more.
The Focus petrols also have a cam sensor (diesels don't), I don't know whether the ECU stops outputting to the tacho if that is missing or whether it just stops outputting to the coil pack.

i do have two inputs available for a tacho , one via the t2 ecu and the second via the loom Ryan made for me (number 3)

And pin 20 on my T2 loom is also a tacho input .....

Now that sounds like a nightmare to figure out!

I guess what id like to know is , on a bog standard focus mk1 , what engine sensor or sensors does the ecu get its signal from to drive the tacho/rev counter.

Depends which ECU, it's an oxygen sensor input on some.

The source of the RPM signal on a Focus is the crank sensor, it looks for the trailing edge of the waveform generated by the 36-1 trigger on the back of the flywheel.

To be honest, it's a tricky one to make work when integrating aftermarket management. For simplicity a lot of the stuff I do goes onto the STACK 0-8000 tacho which can be squeezed into a set of focus clocks.

This was one I did last year:

Nice one cheers Will , im still running the EEC ecu and the focus loom and using a T2 ecu and loom for the cosworth engine ..... the T2 is sending out a RPM signal (pin 20 PMW3) via the cosworth 36 -1 crank pulley.
So i was hoping this signal would suit the focus 36-1 trigger and work the EEC ecu and rev counter??
Gonna try it tonight .....

How did you get on with it?

Personally i'd be surprised it it worked! The closest thing you could probably do would be to mount a second crank sensor on one of the WRC twin sensor brackets to read your 36-1 crank trigger and then feed that into the EEC ECU to simulate normal operation.

Yeah as we discussed , thats gonna be my next port of call - twin crank sensors .

Will the Zetec still be able to pick up the same reading off a 36-1 crank pulley as it does when its fitted to the back of the fly wheel as standard ???

Its Also been suggested that the T2 tacho output can be adjusted to what an EEC ecu usually sees off a standard focus crank sensor set up !??
