That's not quite true, the rat look as far as im aware came from not just people running tatty cars up the quarter, but then from people going a stage further and making thier cars look fucked so that people would be more prepared to bet against them.
So there was a deliberate "look" that people went for that they put effort into achieving in order to make their cars look slower than they are in order to gain the element of surprise.

But in the case of all these uber-gay little crap hatchbacks people are making a slow car look shite not a fast one, which really does have NO point as there is no element of surprise cause they are all as slow as fuck

Be a boring world if we all liked the same things I guess, but I really cant see the point in all these kids ruining their mum's cars just so that it goes better as an accessory to their self hatred.
