Hi, I`m new here and wonder if anyone can help me. I have a 1990 Mk4 Escort 1.3HCS and it will only run on full choke. I had a new fuel pump fitted and new plugs but it just wont idle. As soon as the revs drop it stops. Any ideas?

Check to see if the carb is full of crap blocking the jets, it is a 26/28 TLDM carb, so easy to work on, it was also used on the cat equipped 90/91 1.4 escort/orion, though in larger 28/30 size, so a clean carb.
As it is a problem only at idle, check for power at the idle cut off valve, as this needs a constant 12v supply when running to keep the idle fuel channel open, it shuts the idle channel when the ignition is switched off to prevent run on/dieseling, it's at the top edge of the carb and can be identified by having a wire going to it, if there is no 12v there temporarily put one there from battery live and see if that cures it, another thing to check is the carb filter which is the return(not inlet), unscrew this and clean the filter with wd40 etc on the end, it comes off easy, the pipe stub pointing down is the one from the pump and the fuel passes through this filter before going in carb, the top most return stub with the filter should also have a 1.1mm restrictor in it, some idiots take these out!!
