Hopefully TOTB.
Only just got it back from getting painted on thursday, so working pretty much flat out to get it back together for MOT next saturday.
Although still interior/dash to sort, put windows back in, engine etc etc.
I just started the work I wanted to do about 5 months later than I should have lol.

Although the rust is starting to eat away at this car, hence some of the work now. Although the chassis is also suffering due to the power I think, as well as some old damage that was repaired early in the cars life. Some bad spots around the rear window where the chassis must be badly twisting.
The repairs and cage should tighten that back up. Although I'm putting a milder cam and bigger silencers onto it to try and quieten and smoothen things a bit. Dont think power will suffer though. Also fitting a cog drive instead of the serp belt to totally eliminate slip. This should help the top end a little. But I imagine I'll go through a few belts in the process. Cogged belts are supposed to be very very fussy in pulley alignment etc.
Hopefully that wont pose a problem for TOTB.
Although it is shocking how well it goes at the top end. It really shouldnt go as fast as it does lol

still an awesome car with the aerodynamics of a brick like mine, when i built the escort i looked at loads of shells and managed to find a virtually unwelded shell, but then had it fully group 4,so that the shell would habdle the power and so far seems fine, there are some good mk2 granadas about but i suppose it woul;d be alot of hassle redoing everything again,
Is it still putting out around the 750 hp mark ,i suppose the torque is whats pulling it apart as i would imagine it makes as much torque as hp ,Be nice in a mk1 coupe lol,
out of interest what 60ft do you get at the pod or proper strip cheers

No idea on power.....but not enough :P
for a 31 year old car, mine is in incredibly good condition. The main area that rusted, was the perimeter of the quarter panel. But the quarter panel had been replaced early on.
Apart from a couple of small places elsewhere, the shell is pretty much rot free. I doubt there are any cleaner ones about that havent been restored. Even when I opened up the sill and a couple of other areas around the quarter panel, everywhere is like new still.
At Santa Pod on Mickey Thompson ET Streets best 60ft was about 1.54. On the drag radials, they were low 1.7s
But I think with a harder launch, the radials would go better too. I just find it difficult to commit to a proper launch. It's just so brutal on the car. Plus I keep thinking it wont grip.
But those sorts of tyres have unbelievable amounts of grip on a prepped track.

the micky ts have unreal grip i used some 26inch ones but they made my gearing horrible but the grip was superb infact too much off the line but i suppose with yours being heavier probably work better,
To be honest with the torque your car must make i would think with a hard launch you would probably be in the high 1.4 60ft ,and you know its built to take it lol

Definitely not !!! I wish it was.
Even during this stripdown, all 3 discs of the clutch have rotated on the centre hub, deforming the centre sections. The rivets simply havent held. Although I'd say a minor design flaw led to it.
Sourcing replacements turned into a nightmare from the Australian supplier. So ended up having to buy a new clutch. Went for ACT this time, if it works as ACT claim it should be great as the new one is organic. Although the old triple cerametallic Aus clutch drove very well too.
Ive twisted several half shafts over the years, although the current set seem to be holding. Largest I can go and retain a proper diff is 31 spline.
And the gearbox. they are very strong, but people have broke them with less going on. Of course, others have used them beyond what I have too. But the gears etc are all just standard T56 albeit cryo treated.
So there really are a few potential areas for breakdowns. I dont want to break anything !
But I'd say a 1.4x is doable for sure. Next tyres I race on will be Hoosier drag radials though. What 60fts did you get on the slicks ?
On the 1.5x runs I was launching at 5000rpm. And still I didnt keep my foot on the floor lol Launched with about 68% throttle
Looks like a fair bit of wheelspin too until about 40mph, then it gripped

You just dont want it after you have traction lol. Ejector seat might come in handy

Ford 8.8" rear.
With hindsight 9" would have been preferable, but the 8.8" came up at sort of the right time and price.
And really never expected the car to be where it's at today anyway in terms of performance. It just got out of control !
TBH with a 60ft like that, it would be hard to imagine drag tyres making any difference. There really isnt much room for improvement ! Although guess there is always some.

Regards where your car is today we all start off with an aim which we are happy with but then you allways want more lol ,and allways costs more than ever expected, still i wouldnt mind the granny sat in my garage next to the escort

yeah cant moan at the 60ft, cant believe youve broke 2 shafts on an 8.8 ,as i have the 8.0 inch in mine and has been ok ,just sold a 9 inch with 35 spline strange shafts in that would of gone under yours a treat, but as you said some people fit and forget and others push the boundarys like the tko you have ive seen some break at 600 hp and others running 850 and had no probs, pot luck really Steve,

The shafts I twisted were Moser, relatively cheap by any standards. Seems the bigger the shaft, the more inclined the splines are to twist
I started with "small" 28 spline which never twisted even ad pretty much 10s dead When I went to a big shaft 28 ( 31 shaft splined down to 28 ) the splines twisted.
Same when I upgraded to 31 spline shaft and diff. The splines twisted.
I'm now on Mark Williams 31 spline shafts. The difference in quality is night and day.
Nobody seems to make a LSD in 33 spline or larger though. There are a couple of plated type diffs available. But in my experience, any diff with a diff pin, LSD or not is a ticking time bomb. They all break. I'm using a Ford Racing Torsen.
I did drive for a while with a spool when I first fitted the 31spline stuff. What a piece of shit. Never again would I put something like that into my car. Horrible in every respect, for no benefit whatsoever.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
My mates Vette which ran HUGE MT drag radials was only just beating those 60ft's, thats using a linked 9" setup with circa 800hp so I'd be over the bloody moon with those times on what is realistically a much smaller tyre !
