Default Cheap Diesel Runabout?

I need to try save some money up so selling my current car and going to buy a cheap diesel to get around in.

Only things that matter here is reliability to be honest, ive got about £750 max to spend, so i know im not going to get anything i can polish an cherish every weekend but just want something half decent and reliable and thats not totally gutless.

A quick look on ebay gave me , last shape escort TD , mondeo mk2 TD, citroen zx and xantia diesels, few peugeot 306s, 406s, i dont want anything small like a 205 or a 106 cause im a big guy.

Would also be good if i could run it off veg oil ?

Thanks

tell ya what mate, i've had 3 pug 406, 1905cc turbo diesels and there great.. and ya can get em for a few hundred quid with tax and test. nice to drive, comfortable as well. taxi drivers used to use them so you regularly see them with 3 or 400k on and still going.

mk 2 mondeo mate. I know a lad who sold one with 250.000 mile on it and the car is still going strong. The 1.8 diesels are a good old engine.

My dad had 2, both with around 400k and they were still sound when he sold them in 2003.

i was in the same position, i ended up with a rover 620 GDSI,its comfy enough, decent miles to the gallon and they are just over 100 bhp iirc, so they aren't gutless.

i found gumtree to be very useful, loads of cars put up fresh every day, the diesels seem to go quick though at that kind of price range, you do get the odd ex taxi popping up cheap, high miles but they can be good value.

I bought a escort van for a cheap runabout. It's amazing on fuel and will apparently run on anything although I've only ever used derv in it.
