Its only rumors at the moment and i cant see it happening as they get 35.6 million viewers watching it which out weighs wimbledon, so its not like they arent getting the viewers
Tbh it would be a mistake for the bbc to axe it

Apparently it costs too much and they want to use the money to fund bbc4 instead

What's the source of this info then?

I think it would be a shame if they got rid of it. Can see it ending up on a pay channel if they do. Considering how motorsport is probably our most successful sporting venture, I think it's pretty pathetic how we can't actually watch most of it without paying.

As if 700 people complained about the Antiques Roadshow being cancelled

Would be a shame if they lose it. It will no doubt end up on Sky if they do.

i'm sure that i read in bernie ecclestone's book that its his own tv production company that actually do all the filming of the F1 so that the quality remains the same for every country its broadcast in... all the BBC have to do is actually screen it, so how its costing the BBC too much is strange....

I saw this happening as Mr Murdoch has been sniffing around F1 for a few years and even offered to purchase this year.

Looks like it will end up on sky.

F1 will always be on free to air TV as that is how the business model works, the only way it will ever be solely on pay-tv is if Murdoch buys the rights from CVC ( Ecclestone )

Dojj, your 'information' ( from the Daily Mail website ) is heresay at best

The same info has been all over the place though so if it wasn't at least a memo on someones desk it wouldn't be a story would it

and the cost to the BBC is sending peeps all across the world to cover the races so it would be more cost effective if hey simply signed over ALL their coverage to bbc4 while it's bein screened and the main show would then be aired on bbc1/2 as normal. You instantly boost the figures AND justify the the price

you can send a cheque for services rendered to the usual address

didnt stop them selling off WRC viewing rights to a random sports channel so it would be naive to think it wont happen to F1.

Let me clarify.

The business model of f1 currently relies on it being on free to air tv. I'm not on about the business model of tv rights but f1 as a whole. The ONLY way f1 will become pay tv only is if Murdoch buys F1 as a whole from cvc ( not just the tv rights!) and changes the business model.
This is unlikely unless the teams then restructure their business model as all of their revenue then comes from tv cash. Thus meaning the next concorde agreement is crucial.

Current press stories are just a bit of posturing from beeb to see of it can be done cheaper and to gauge opinion.

The only thing we know is that CVC are looking at an exit strategy, but for f1 to become pay tv only then f1 would change it's business model fundamentally as would the teams, which doesn't seem likely at the present time.

the sponsors of the teams rely on maximum exposure for their advertising, pay tv doesn't give them that, having said that the last time i checked the irish rights are for setanta sports (who watches that?) anyone i know watches the bbc coverage.

They could save money and make it better if they binned Martin Brundle.

The cost is what BBC or whoever have to pay for the right to broadcast it.
That price is determinded by market forces, i.e number or bidders for it, if no-one wanted to pay for it, F.I would have to give it away for free.

If the BBC were allowed through the gate free of charge and used thier own cameras and crew it could probably be done for far less.

and where did it get WRC?

F1 going pay to view or even on sky would kill the sport dead imo, the only way it can survive is by getting the great viewing figures and exposure it does already on the bbc.
