Default Ford escort 1.816v mechanical help needed please

Hi,
I have a few problems need to resolve and would appreciate the help.
It's a escort van fitted with with an escort 1.816v si engine.

Now the first problem is on start up the revs drop to nearly stalling point then shoot up to around 2000 revs, I'm assuming this is the idle control valve but wanted another opinion, after afew minutes it will idle fine.

Second problem is when accelerating in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and then taking my foot off the pedal the van jolts abit from front end and a noise comes from front end, sounds like a belt slipping a medium pitched dog yelp describes it. It doesn't do it if I really gently take foot off accelerator.

Help would really be appreciated

It won't cause any harm letting the revs go up and down. A mate of mine used to have a zetec that did exactly the same, I can't remember the cause now but it wasn't much serious. I think these have a plastic t-piece in a vaccuum line under the throttle body, these can crack leading to poor running. Could also be Idle valves are common on the zetecs along with air flow meters. Unplug the AFM and try again. If it runs better then you've found the problem!
