Take the plugs out when winding it over

Engine will spin faster as theres no compression and also will reduce the load on the bearings until they get oil pressure.

and make sure you've prefilled the oil filter with oil too.

Yes you should, the light should extinguish as well, although, of course this isn't applicable in your case.

Plugs out,try a little squirt of oil down each bore, quick turn over, plugs in and try again.
Had this exact same problem with a rebuilt rs turbo motor, tried all day and it showed no compression,I drove the car in and pulled the motor, swapped heads,my mate timed it up from a known mint bottom end and no compression, did this and she was the sweetest turbo motor I ever heard.
Never failed to start again.
It can sometimes do the plugs in and smoke a bit but it will clear and then you`ll be fine.

ahh, o well. thats where it comes in handy to have a giant set of jump leads. i bought 40meters of 35mm2 welding cable to make jumpleads, but ended up replacing the leads on my welder, so got to look for more now. as jumpleads always seem to be that little but short :@

what is everyones obsession with this, just start it you will know straight away if its got oil pressure or not, i changed a sump on a e30 325i years ago and the oil pump drive shaft didnt engage properly started it up and light never went out, it ran for over 10 seconds before i realised ! took sump off redone pump drive and started it, that car was still going 2 years ago 30k miles later still spot on and a hard driven car, its very difficult for the pump to pick up and push oil right round your engine at cranking speed but it will instantly pick it up at idle if its built correctly.

normally i would do the same but iv fitted a different sump and pickup pipe to the engine and the wiring and fuel lines wernt done when i posted so i wanted a better idea

When I rebuilt my Cosworth engine I removed the turbo oil feed line and turned it over until I got oil coming out of there.

Then started it up.

that was another reason i wanted oil pressure, the turbo hasnt been used in a couple of years and i wanted to make sure it already had oil in it

There is something seriously wrong with a cossie if it doesn't pick up oil at cranking speed even on a brand new build, so long as the pump has been "wetted" with oil it will pick up no problem, some bad engine designs in the oil dept like certain evos often need oil pouring down the supply hole from pump to filter after long lay offs to get pressure up.
