xr4x4-2wd cos-4x4 cos front brakes
wondering if anyone could help
friend of mine has an xr4x4 2.9i
he has a set of 4x4 sapphire cosworth front calipers and bought new saph 4x4 discs to fit them but the xr4x4 seems to have the same raised/dished part as the 2wd cosworths,so the discs are no good
he doesnt want to change for 4x4 cosworth hubs, shafts etc just to fit the calipers so question is what discs can he fit?
i think 2wd cos discs are 278mm and 4x4 283mm both 24mm thick
thanks joe

if it's the 2.9 you need to use different discs
on all the conversions i did i used boa 24V granada discs, redrilled to 4 stud with the 24V calipers and they were a direct fit with no offset or fitment issues
some folk have used the 2wd discs and the 4wd calipers and the issue there is that the discs are too big and grind the caliper, nothing too bad but you also have the offset issues to deal with of about 2mm out of true one way or the other
if you have the dohc 4x4 then they run a different offset again
for the basic numbers you need to remember that if you use the normal 2wd disc and caliper as a starter point, be it cosworth or any other 2wd sierra, the dohc 4x4 has an offset of between 1.5mm and 4mm further out, the 2.9 4x4 has an offset of 4mm and the escos stuff has an offset of 8mm further out so you really need to try every combination as the offset isn't only affected by the top hat of the discs but also the offset of the caliper carriers
the 2wd cos uses a 283mm disc
the rest of the cosworth range use a 278mm disc, be they 4x4 cos or granada cos
the other sierra's with rear discs or abs use a 260mm disc but, again, you have to be aware of the funny offsets of the 4x4 cars
if i was any good and doing pictures i'd draw you a diagram but i'm sure you could get the basics up with this info
hopefully this will make more sense now
the lugs are the points that change, 2wd ones are the basic starters that you'd take your datum measurement from
the xr ones go 4mm out towards the hubs
the escos ones move the point 8mm towards the hubs
the dohc 4wd ones are the problematic ones as some will move out 4mm and some move out only 1.5mm
most discs will have the same top hat depth measurement which leaves the variables in the caliper brackets so you need to find the variable disc measurements
if you are thinking about it though, the st170 focus discs also have the same top hat offset BUT you can use the mk3 mondeo calipers as everything works out, but if you were to think "i can get mk3 mondeo discs for free and redrill them" then you can get them for free yes, but they are the wrong offset to use on most cars by about 2.5mm
