Default Power steering cooler

I know some have fitted a cooler in place of the standard cooling pipe on Cossie

Info and pics wanted to see what others have done - mine needs doing as it always boils when out driving hard.

Just fit any type of oil cooler on the return line. Or you can buy an open more exposed unit that some do for PAS.

Bailey ( I think ) make a reservoir which hooks up to the cooling system as a cooler too.

How do you connect a cooler up to the standard pipes off the rack or do you have to use or make different fittings

Rack fittings and pipework have been covered a few times recently.

The return is just low pressure, so any oil suitable 10mm rubber hose and hose clamps will be fine.
Then just fit a cooler with 10mm fittings, or you can go for the screw on JIC/AN style fittings etc

Cheers for that - so basically just use all the standard hoses etc on to 10mm fitting on the cooler

Yes that ones almost identical to the one I used, will do the job fine, the adds a bit wrong imo though, it's not racing track work that is the problem, it's the much higher pressure, therefore temperatures created when doing town work, the slower the pump the more pressure it creates therefore more heat, another part of the problem imo is the odd seal arrangement in the cap, as it gets saturated and leaks past the seal.
I just used regular OPA pipe for mine, I don't know how to put piccies up or I would!!

Yes, although stepping the likes of those 5/8" BSP fittings down to 10mm isnt always nice.

Earls do a range of coolers that use normal JIC/AN fittings, so it's easy to slap a 10mm hose on.

Or there are oil coolers available that will take a push on hose directly

Just random, but here's one. Not sure what size they are though

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-R1100RT-OI...f#ht_500wt_949

Or a cooler in it's most basic form, as per many OE. ( although this one is expensive ) But gives you an idea of the variety out there

Mine

Very simple, as described before, remove metal loop and use 2 lengths of hose to connefct to your existing system.
It's on the low pressure return side so no issues with very high pressures to worry about therefore jubilee clips are fine.

Can't really remember, i think the hose was 3/8" fuel/oil hose, but i could be wrong on the diameter.
Just check the size of the hose that you need to fit straight to the rack and the bottle (i removed the original hose from rack and put a longer one on to go straight to the cooler). Then you need 2 appropriate 90 degree fittings on your cooler for 3/8" pipe for example.

When you say remove the metal loop, what part do you mean? The silver pipes on my rack in this picture?

I was going to leave them small metal pipes as it is and fit a cooler in the return to reservoir line

Also the 2 Aeroquip fittings i have covered with red caps, The rack holes for each is different, one is large and one is small diameter, shown in pic below

which is feed and which is return?

Thanks
Marc

MK, all the metal pipes fitted directly to the rack stay.

The metal loop to be removed is plumbed in via rubber hoses, all you are doing is removing it and connecting a cooler in its place basically.

The bottom of my pictures has the original cooling loop showing, it's at the bottom of the picture, it is black with rusty patches and is/was fixed along the chassis rail.
My pics were taken just before i removed it and plumbed in my cooler.

Because when the shell was built up at AG Motorsport i was intending to run the standard cossie power steering set up, so Andrew made me up a custom column set up, then i changed my mind and decided not to run the cossie pump but i did not want to chop the shell up at home to suit a corsa set up. Also i have heard from a few people that unless you buy the expensive top quality ESP gear that you can quite easily beat the rack with fast steering changes causing it to lock up and go notchy mid change
