Seems no co-incidence that all the scandinavian cars run huge exhaust housings compared to UK cars.

IMO its huge exhaust housings, nicoseal liners, and mega low comp (allegedly ).

LOL at all the reliablity BS and No it can't be, and why would you need it, never use all the power, no place to use it.... made a good lunch time read though!
Oh, BTW..My tuner has a 630hp at wheels Merkur that drives to work everyday, and I've even seen his wife drive it! that's proper funny..it's an 11sec car with a standard T5. What's this got to do with this post?? nothing, like a lot of other BS posted by other people.

BoschMan- Where you hear that? I remember the owner of a certain scandinavian car telling me he was running (i think) 6.2:1...

Now i say that, 5.8:1 seems bizzarley familiar from somewhere

And why wouldnt they run low comp? Dont make a car more laggy, just feck all power before the boost, almost exactly like their dyno charts show

You get more torque from a higher comp engine than a lo comp engine!FACT...imo ok you gotta run big ron fuel to mantain the ignition curve just like this one does!

Phil, I think CR is only a small factor affecting torque

Whats big torque got to do with it anyway? Yeah you need some torque, not loads tho

Very good achievement with the engine.... I agree with what Karl is saying though, from an engineering point of view, when you are dealing with such forces, engine life will be comprimised IMO!

SECS- Thats just skylines, this sort of power from 4cyls isnt that uncommon in japan.

Ive seen (DVDs ive got etc) 1.8 RWD S13 200SXs run 9sec 1/4s on roadlegal tyres etc.

Oh, just to add, i dont really agree with Adus that Japs are the best with this mad engine stuff, i think they just the best known.

The scandinavian might be the best, just they not one for proven performance figures (yet) so no proof (i hate using that word on here ) barring dyno numbers which never gets someone "world famous".

Oz and USA are probly the best "proven" ones at mo (they catching Japan fast and in many cases overtook them), but Japan will be the most famous as been proving it on the sorta cars we associate with for years n years.

Can we please put this reliability issue in perspective . Here are som FACTS for you:

1. A drag car (like the Probe mentioned), will do 50 miles a season absolutely TOPS (including testing) and probably only half that in reality, so do me a favour about quoting this as a sign of good reliability .
2. A rally-cross car will do around 500-700 miles TOPS a season including testing, so again, do me a favour regarding quoting this as well .

I have no idea how many miles that the Norwegian cars do, but if I remember correctly, the very article written by PF on the Ruud car, lifed the engine in HOURS . So do me a favour about quoting this as an acceptable span for an engine. I know it is horses for courses, but you can't write one thing and then state another . So please make up your mind which it is....

I do agree that the bigger engines do seem to take the power better. Harvey even said of his 500 engines that due to the c/r and the amount of fuel thrown, they never blow up, they just wear out more quickly and then start to breath heavily. Obviously if you don't take heed of these symptoms, then I imagine it would do so, but who could ignore all that smoke out the exhaust (oil blow-by the rings etc - as mentioned by one of the Norwegians already) . At that time they need a freshen up with pistons, rings, oil pump etc and they're as good as new.

My 500 engine did 20k of absolute DEATH, Admittedly it had fresh oil before every track day and as well as every 2k miles (whichever comes first). We're talking speeds that would have shamed the recent PF Daddy thrash 2-3 times EVERY tank full. At 20k it was starting to burn oil and I estimate would have needed the above freshen up by 25k.

I would "imagine" that these bigger power cars are treated just as well and would need a similar thing at least by 15-20k miles. Unfortunately this IS the price you pay for that kind of power - a Ł1500-Ł2000 bill every time 15-25k was reached (power and use dependent).

To be honest i dont think thats too bad.

Big issue is the car built n mapped properly in the first place so like you say, things just wear out rather than break.

I think the Big difference is the thinking behind tunning. In the UK it's always "Low Comp" here in the US it's the opposite. We've been running stand alone for a while now, you guys are finally catching on..
Again, my tuner with 630 at the wheels at his disposale, doesn't mean he's going to use all the pony's everyday. You want reliability?? drive from NYC to a drag track 1.4 hours away race do 11's drive home, sit in traffic, drive it back to work the next day.
If anybody in there right mind is going to have huge HP like this i'm sure they're not going to expect it to be all roses..sure drive it to your tuner(unless you are the tuner) and have it checked out every once in a while. I always found out that the one's who say it can't be done are the one's who can't do it.
Super huge Respect to the Norway boys!!!
Oh, and the magazine is Called "Performance Ford" not "Pretty Ford" Performance comes in all guises..it's a race car?? So what?? ALL the magazines here mix street cars with Race cars it fits the bill to what readers want to see. BIG UP Performance Ford!! They bring us cars I could only dream about owning..be it a MK1 Escort or the Beautiful Blue Escort.

Phil obviously assumes its a standard cosworth T5 and not the US T5 version.

I've asked before what the difference is between them and nobody knows but as 100's of US cars with big torque V8's run up the strip all day with them, then there definately is
