MK2 Golf with a 1.8T 20v Conversion

I was looking through Edition38 Classifieds and saw a few of these for sale.. I have always been a fan of how a Big Bumper MK2 Golf GTi looks, so with the VAG 1.8 Turbo and c250bhp engine it should be a plenty quick enough and pretty reliable I'd have thought.
Something like this looks amazing:

Has anyone on here owned or had any experience with one of these?? What are they like to live with??
Cheers,
Grant

the 1.8 is easier to tune and quite strong. vr6 sounds good and goes well but are less tunable whereeas 1.8t you could get more power for less ... none of them are my things but alot of my mates are into it and done the 1.8t conversion.. also done a 4wd mk2 running 400bhp but it didnt last

I really rate the VR6 engine, it's a peach - but in a Mk2 a 1.8T is a way better bet. I've been in Golfs with both engines, and other than the sound and lowdown grunt, I can't think of a single reason to pick it over the 20v engine.

1.8t is the right engine IMO for a mk2,imagine that out of the factory in the early 90`s,would have been the bollocks!!
There`s a slightly unfinished 1.8t mk2 over on retro rides for £3k odd which looks standard and a VR6 mk2 in Dundee funnily enough for £1850 which sounds a bargain IMO.

The 1.8t is cheaper for further bhp over the vr6 conversion.

Carnt beat a good 20v turbo
ide bin the KO turbos tho.
As people have said VR6 are good but to get more power from is just too expensive
I plan on turboing my corrado (KR) soon 16vT have G60 management already so should be pretty simple gonna get some audi S2 pistons for my KR or use my 2.0 2e with a KR head since i have a few spairs hanging around :P

I bought that off him. Bought and sold it for 3k. Went well for what it was and what I paid. (Although could have killed me as the bottom of the steering column wasnt fixed properly and fell off during a trackday, luckily I was refuelling at dinner time but had been canning it all day!) Had a chipped AGU 1.8t out of golf gti mk4. Had more fun out of it than my esc cos and focus RS combined. Love another.

You serious??? You've looked into this for 6 months and still think you can get more power from a VR6?? Does the face that the 1.8t comes with more power than the VR6 as standard not ring any alarm bells. You can easily get well over 200bhp with just a remap and breathing mods, but to get that kind of power from a VR6 requires very expensive turbo or supercharging.
I really rate the VR6 engine, it's a peach - but in a Mk2 a 1.8T is a way better bet. I've been in Golfs with both engines, and other than the sound and lowdown grunt, I can't think of a single reason to pick it over the 20v engine.

I have a 1.8t Audi s3 as my daily driver and it is by far the best car I've had up to now!! Reliable and nippy !
Ran a 13.9 1/4 at pod with just a remap!!

how much to convert in bits, i have a focus RS and 1.8T gti as my daily runner, if i buy a house this year i'm gonna get a diesel and sell the RS, would like to know if the golf would be worth keeping to strip for a project mk1 or mk2?
is it a straight forward swap??

It's pretty much nut and bolt swap. The thing people forget is that there's about 17 different types of 20vT, all with different power outputs and comp ratios. There are big valve heads and small valve heads, drive by wire throttles and cable throttles. Then there's some with VVt and some without.
You have to know you're engines and know what your buying. The 150bhp engines don't take much boost before they start melting pistons as they have a high comp ratio. Similarly the 225 engines are low comp, reinforced block, bigger oil pumps, twin intercoolers, etc etc. If your going to convert like I did make sure you get a high bhp lump to start with. Like most conversions its management thats the issue.

wouldnt need much power in a mk1 though....and the car owes me very little. its really tidy so gonna be worth £1000 in parts alone without the engine

I tried to keep things simple with my Ibiza. BAM 225 engine on Omex, but converted to run a cable throttle body. It's never been RR'd but I'm guessing in the region of 250 - 260 by the time it has stainless, filter and a good map.

Good cars, but the gearbox is the weak point, gets tight on the downchange and that means a new diff, although apparently it can be done for £250-300 then it's sorted.

AUM engine car, so has K03s and VVT.
Custom code remap, forge recirc valve and pipercross panel filter.
I have do 50k virtually faultless miles in it (1No snapped suspension spring) in just over 3 years.

Great car IMO. Yes they aint the quickest, and dont handle as good as others but they are built well and touch wood has been reliable.
